Because if they're fake, it's too much of a loss. When i worked at a fast food restaurant, a bunch of guys came in, made big orders, and each paid with a £50 note. They ended up being fakes. We found out when cashing up. It was the cashiers fault for letting it happen. We had tester pens, and the cashier was either too scared to test the notes infront of them incase there was a problem, or he just thought he knew better. Either way, he accepted them. We had police in next day checking cctv to see if they recognize any of the guys paying with those fake £50 notes. Maybe with some smaller independent places, it's also about not having enough change, but with most other places theres always a set minimum amount in the tills each day when opening, and then there's the safe round back. They can always change a £50, but they won't accept one because if its a fake, the loss is too much

It isn't that the shops can't accept them, but they just likely dont keep enough cash on hand to give change to everyone wanting to use That large of a bill.

So drug dealers and crooks can pay each other more easily. Same as the €500 note

Honestly only time ive gotten use out of anything larger than a tenner note is paying people for work like a builder, but yeah they are ultimately pointless now apart from taking to the bank to swap out for smaller notes its stupid
