Totally agree, the only mod I can think of that has kept the easthetic is Applied Energetics. Its so weird

God I just love playing modded 1.12.2 and 1.7.10 to purely experience how it was back then. Loading up an Modpack like Skyfactory, Stoneblock and any FTB pack. It’s just so fun and interesting.

I think it's what I call the foundation problem. If you change the foundation too much the mod won't go with other mods that massively hurts the appeal of the mod it can no longer be put in a large modpack. That is why a modpack that does one thing very well but only changes one aspect of the game have the highest appeal. Or even better yet a additive mod that can be piled up with other additive mods or they all can work together somehow. The other thing is the 1.12 reset, a time where many mods vanished and people rushed to replace 1.12 mods that didn't carry on. Keep in mind that the foundation of minecraft has been shifting a lot over the years even without mods, making the map taller for example, adding copper which many mods had added already, doing more to the nether which many mods already did. If you go far back enough even very basic things like adding horses. All of these foundation shifts through mods and updates makes it easier to just to add things rather than change the core and foundation of the game.

Mod spotlights are even worse now :< It's like, "Wow, there's a mod, and you get two cool things that I don't really know how to use," while back in the day, you'd get full explanations with all possible options and easter eggs-everything included. I'm currently looking for a video about Railcraft Reborn, but all I can find are videos from 2017

You know blud was a Creative mode player when the City texture pack is at the top. A lot of items were unrecognizable in Survival mode, Natural and Fantasy did a better job keeping the original items intact.

I give this list a skill-issue rating of 6/10. Not quite high enough to put screwdriver in S-tier, but not low enough to rate every jackhammer at A or higher. Also firestarter is obviously SS-tier. Fight me.

I attribute it to modern minecraft losing its experimental and strange vibe. Back in the day it was a crabshoot on what could be in the game as it never tried to be "realistic" and that led to much more creative potential. Nowadays everything added is so safe and sterilized with most modern mobs having no purpose- hell, most are just real life animals being thrown in. Its become so bloated and lost that otherworldly vibe, and with mojang trying to make a cut and dry aesthetic for minecraft, modders have also tried to match it. It all comes together to rot the modding scene and nobody wants break out of mojang's new mold for minecraft. To me, 1.7.10 was the peak of modding and playing modern modpacks feels kinda souless.

Not true. There are still great mods coming out that add cool shit: ars noveau is a cool new magic mod that is super in depth and allows you a system to build your own spells like thaumcraft. Also the people who are developing thaumcraft 7 seem to be cooking. Iron's spells and spell books is electroblob's wizardry but better. There are still great mods but yeah they do feel more vanilla like mainly due to the art. The textures in the newer mods are always very vanilla like so they fit in as many packs as possible and tbh i kinda hate how some mods look (im looking at you lycanite's mobs). Overalk modded minecraft doesnt really feel like vanilla+ for me because i play challenge packs like skyfactory, atm 9 to the skies, stoneblock 3 and so on. When i get bored of those i plan to start a really hard pack like enigmatica 2 expert.

I think the answer is pretty straightforward. Modders have taken up the role of making the base game feel complete because Mojang doesn't really. Regardless of how you feel about the updates a few new wood textures and a couple performance upgrades don't feel worth it to keep up with the updates, not when nearly every mod does that as a second thought. I think if Mojang integrated a fraction of the common modded content (like they did with copper) and gave them actual purpose, mods would return to their crazy approach.

It just bothered me how (at least the older mashups) used wool for certain blocks so a red wool (just an example I don’t recall if it was the red one) will be a wall with a little window in the Skyrim mashup.
