Not the longest essay I've watched on Disco Elysium, but beautifully curated points to demonstrate your statement. I think this has definitely helped augment my experience of the game (and of some of its conceptual contents), sincere thanks for that On a tangent, something that even essayists who comment on the musical references in the game don't seem to mention - the inclusion of a lot of Manic Street Preachers' lyrics and oblique references to their favourite literary and historical talking points. I would say that their music might be oversimplified as "wistful rock n roll leftists" - the game takes lines like "the future teaches you to be alone, the present to be afraid and cold" (from a song referencing the Spanish Civil War and fascism in Europe more generally (there's also the line "if I can shoot rabbits, then I can shoot fascists" - a slogan spread during the time and also in the song's lyrics), wordily named "If You Tolerate This (Then Your Children Will Be Next)"). Klaasje's title is lifted from "Miss Europa Disco Dancer", their song "Motorcycle Emptiness" is referenced in Kim's case files, and they've also quoted from R.S. Thomas' "No Truce With The Furies" in their lyrics and album liner notes. There's also a reference to "Door To The River" - both a title of a Willem de Kooning painting and then used as a song title (de Kooning is a favourite artist of theirs) - his art style actually feels possibly influential to the art style of the game itself, so this might just be a direct reference to him or it might be both.

That's such a good way to put it - my brain hasn't let go of Disco Elysium ever since I've played it. It settled in and nested somewhere in my head. Beautiful video, I cried (why - why does this game feel so profound, like a kind of impossible thing. Like some kind of irrational hope)
@ThatMans-anAnimal11 ай бұрын
Communism isn't empirically true, lmao. It's based in Hegel's idealism. It's proof is rational, not empirical. Measurehead's scientific racism has a decidedly better claim to empirical truth. No matter the technical issues you might have with it, at least it's an empirical claim.

It's been months since you released this video or reacted with a comment but I wanted to note something. In the book that the writer of disco Elysium wrote, the one that has only recently got translated from Estonian, it's noted that the Pale CAN be pushed by by a sufficiently fervent communist. Two men have a conversation in the Pale, one a nihilist, the other, a communist. In a moment of particularly strong hope and brief in their fellow human being, the pale around the communist gets pushed back, and the nihilist is able to notice this. There's a video elsewhere on KZbin that goes into the book and I would recommend it.

I gotta say, it's refreshing to hear someone approach the big theme of Communism in this game from a bit more of a neutral approach. Seems a lot of the videos made on Disco's political sphere tend to vehemently praise Communism. And I find it hard to get engaged with the "analysis" when the creator is shoving their bias into it. A great video. You deserve some more subs.
@yeastmobile Жыл бұрын
They don't seem to be engaging with the communism aspect any differently than the game or other communists do. This is how communists feel about communism the maker of this video didn't do anything special.

Hey Mattias - short answer, yes! Longer answer: eventually, yes. I've been incredibly busy with a lot of other stuff going on in my life which has meant I haven't had time to dedicate to videos (that, and I think I'm going to shelve my next project for a bit and come back to it later for the sake of getting *something* done). I do plan on doing more here though, so do stay tuned!

I loved the phrase "Something *beautiful* is going to happen" since my second playthrough. After having gotten a grip on the game in the first, it kind of encapsulates what it's about to me: hope in the face of uncertainty. I love how it ties into the meaning of Cindy's "masterpiece" too. You mutually contributed to the creation and meaning of eachother's art. Her paint brush, and your blood.

@JamieZero72 жыл бұрын
The game sucks, it's a point-and-click until figure out what to do. Even if things seem so simple. Falls into that typical point and click. And tries to go for a "deep story". The developer's love for communism, killing, and stealing from people. And the communist fanboys are annoying around the game.

Excellent video, my dude. I never actually drew that connection in my head about art being a way to process and move on from that past, and how that relates to the significance of Harry helping Egg Head perfect the music. I was like Egg Head's portrait when you said that lmao, like it really changes things that I now understand this one part of the game that I didn't understand before and I have more things to think of whenever my brain randomly brings up Disco Elysium. I love it, subbed and I hope you eventually put out more stuff.

ah yes, the good ol' "i can imagine a better world therefore communism is good." what leftist forget is that they never had the monopoly when it comes to better worlds. their ad hoc justification of being the best in the best of possible worlds category falls flat. they will keep repeating that 'we've stopped imagining about life after capitalism' except the truth is they've been doing nothing else except imagining. he entirely misses his own many analogies that warn precisely against this only too reiterate it again. basically, after supposedly claiming that capitalism snuffs out our imagining, then we have to imagine harder! just like the silly little reading club.

For a scene that completely destroyed me emotionally when I got to it, it's shockingly easy to miss! Kim just offhandedly mentions that you could rest if you want to. It's such an important part of Harry's emotional arc, imo that it's honestly pretty buckwild how it's sort of off to the side of the main story.

"Dad, why is my sister named Violet?" "Well son, that's because your mother absolutely loves violets, and thinks that they're beautiful and heartwarming." "Oh, okay, thanks Dad!" "You're welcome, 'Alone at the End of the Universe [SPOILERS: Outer Wilds, Echoes of the Eye]', glad you asked." But seriously, fantastic work here, man. Loved the discussion and comparisons of how the Nomai treated the Hearthians with warmth and curiosity, vs. how alien, lonely, and hostile the strangers feel to us, and how even being aboard their ship makes us feel more alone and trapped than anytime before in the game. And oooof, man, "Paper Boats" just hits so good everytime I rewatch this. The juxtaposition of the lyrics and the visuals, from the dam bursting and literally carrying our Hearthian away downstream, to the stars twinkling away their last moments bittersweetly in the backdrop of space, is just **chef's kiss**
