I agree Roxul is awesome at sound deadening but you stated that you must wear respiratory protection while working with it and I agree you should as the fibers can be quit troublesome. The problem with Roxul and why it isn’t widely used in ported speaker boxes is because they pull air in and push air out and will also push out the Roxul fibers as well. Bet they sound good though and great job for being your first time. I’ll admit I was screaming no when I noticed the amount of glue being sited lol.
@themixuniversity
@themixuniversity Ай бұрын
First, thank you so much for taking time out to watch my video. I used Roxul and sprayed the inside as well so the fibers won't escape, or at least minimize fiber escape. But mostly cos I read online that ATC uses Rockwool for damping. I stole that idea, lol. Yeah, that glue part still gives me nightmares. Rookie mistake. 😂😂. Deuces. ✌

@@themixuniversity You’re more than welcome my friend. Again great first time build. I’ve used Roxul as well for car audio boxes. I just figured I’d mess with ya a little. I’ve also had similar glue incidents. We all have to start somewhere and I’d rather have a little too much glue than not enough and the double baffle vibrate as a result or simply fall apart.

@@P-J-W-777 A rattling cabinet after spending all that money might make a grown man go postal, lmao! Lemme share this with you. So in the middle of my build, I had the cable company come install fiber optics for the studio. At the time, I was sanding the cabinets and they were close to the entrance so I could drag them outside 'cos of the dust. I came back inside and the fat cable guy was sitting on my speaker cabinet. Nooooooooo! Let's just say he made it out alive. 🤣🤣🤣🤣. My girl said at least I know now the cabinet is solid. 😂
@P-J-W-777
@P-J-W-777 Ай бұрын
@@themixuniversity No doubt about that, going postal would have been just the beginning. Wow, such disrespect! Speaking of going postal, the cable guy would have had some fiber permanently installed in his back side. Sounds like something my wife would have said as well. When you decide to build another set of speakers (and you will) try out truck bed liner on the cabinet. You can get it in different colors and looks really good on the box and also acts as a sound deadener and also does really well at protecting the cabinets as well.

The real question is, do they sound like $25k speakers?
@themixuniversity
@themixuniversity Ай бұрын
My experience is that since I started mixing on these speakers, I no longer have to second guess my levels or frequencies. Nor do I have to do the car speakers test, then run back to make adjustments. I have 20 banks and preset emulations of various speakers at the click of a mouse into the pre amp's memory slots. I accomplished my mission. I can't put a price on the quality of sound as that becomes quantitative which is highly improbable. Thx for the challenging question. Deuces. ✌

You chose some very good drivers for this project. Wavecor drivers are designed with help by engineers who used to work for a company called Vifa in Denmark. They are not cheap but the best possible sound starts with the best possible drivers.
@themixuniversity
@themixuniversity Ай бұрын
Thx and much respect. I'll have to give that credit to David Hahn, who works for the largest transducers distributor in Europe. He had suggested the drivers. I just blindly believed him since he also designed the cabinet to precise specifications. I simply took it further with the reinforcements so the box didn't rattle. Imagine a rattling baffle. LMAO! 😂. Thanks for recognizing Wavecor drivers. They are the most linear sounding drivers I've listened to since Vintage King. Deuces. ✌🏽

Nice job! ....couple things u eould of definitely done a bit different: the paint and sprayer! I would of used a sherwin Williams product called "southwest builders quick dry" I would of made a spray booth, or borrowed one. I would have sanded in between each coat. And mist importantly I would of purchased ir borrowed a pro spray solution; graco pro shot, or even better a HVLP setup. You would be appalled at the difference in quality of final product. I mean since you were going all out on a replica of some 25k speakers, then another couple g's is negligible....or buy them and return them when your done for the dirtbag (but professional) option! No hate, just suggestions, as I'm sure these sound as good if not better than anything I own! Kudos to your documentation and editing if this process.

Thx. So about the paint job. That was the most frustrating part of the build. I had no idea what to do and figured I'd wing it. In my head, I saw the finish of a Ferrari but got a truck finish but a dark red good, truck finish. 🤣. Plus the freaking gun was spraying like it didn't want to work. I had zero help from the time I brought the panels home from the CNC cuts. You're right though, I just didn't want to spend another $1,500 on a paint job. But thx again. Deuces.

OMG, but I could have used car soundproofing rubber + sponge (bob). No matter how much you assure me, mineral wool will definitely fly apart all over the area, no matter what you do and no matter how much you assure me, I worked with it for several years on the installation of partitions. What would I have done? Sheathed everything inside with soundproofing of varying density and thickness, within reason. And made a phase inverter using 3D printing. In general, for the future, take large speakers for LF 12-15 inches. The larger the speaker, the better the LF component will be. And if you have a smart head, try to assemble a bandpass resonator for LF, and if a large speaker system, then you can assemble 2 of them for very low and mid-low, adjust a flat line at a frequency of 31-80 Hz. The partitions should be attached to all 4 sides and lined, and also additionally reinforced. The larger the box, the stronger the partitions. PS In general, not bad, very good.

Good project and I like your honesty about messing up at times. All of us do at some time. It's very rewarding researching something, planning it, making it and giving it life! A tip regarding the paint, if you ever paint MDF again, you would benefit with first sealing it with a primer! Your paint gun looks like it gives out huge chunks of paint. I think you would get a much smoother surface with spray paint cans than that house paint gun. The can's spray a finer mist and thinner layers so it will look way smoother.

How was this "ACCIDENTALLY" ? Do you know what the word "ACCIDENTALLY" means ? Also, should NEVER use rockwool or fiberglass wool inside a speaker box. These fibers will exhaust through the ports and into your room and lungs. You may have built an actual dangerous death trap here.
@themixuniversity
@themixuniversity 2 ай бұрын
Thx 4 the feedback. No deathtrap here. Fibrous disentanglement was factored into the damping. Hence, the sealing of the material (not shown) on the exposed surface. I think I covered that fairly. Thx again. I used "accidentally" simply because I, well, David, started the design to replicate the ATC SCM 45. I had no clue at the time what dimensions the transducers were. By the time I built the speakers, the design had morphed into the territory of the ATC SCM 110. We had to restructure the cabinet to accommodate the eventual choice of 8.75 in woofers pumping out a total of 600 W with no baffle. So, bloody hell yeah, "accidentally".
