I just got one and I'm hating it! I come from traditional Sable brushes, I find these water brushes so hard to control. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I mix my colours on the palette, I try to get some colour on the bristles, but they seem to suck all the pigment in (not in the water reservoir tho), and when I put it on the paper, there is not much pigment saturation. I mix some more, and then I press to get some more water, and all the pigment suddendly comes out, so it gets too saturated and mostly ruins my paintings. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks for your message. It's unfortunate that the waterbrush isn't working for you yet. I find a waterbrush a great addition to my brushes-ideal for travel and quick sketches. However, I still use my regular brushes for commissioned work. It's hard to say what might be wrong with yours. Perhaps you could try this: After picking up the paint, squeeze the barrel and drop a drop over a cloth or sponge and then paint on the paper without squeezing the barrel. Or: fill the brush, squeeze a drop over a sponge, pick up some (diluted) paint and paint on the paper. A good quality brush should continue to flow. Which brand are you using? I prefer Pentel for its consistent flow. But Derwent seems to have a good brush as well. If you can send a photo/video, I might be able to offer more advice. I'm sorry I don't have the solution right now, but I'll let you know if I think of something. Have a great day! Best, Judith

I love my water brush pens. I have one particular problem though. As there is a small constant flow of water the color gets constantly diluted and it is hard to create really dark hues with it. Do you have an idea how to adress this problem? Thevidea with the sponge in that box is great btw. I will adopt it. Thank you for that!

Thank you Jens, You could try a few things: make the paint a bit more concentrated than you want the result on the paper. Make the brush dry before you pick up the paint, and most important: use the tip of the brush. And hold the brush vertical while you paint. I mean if you drag the bristels over the paper, the water wil start to flow. And of course don't squeeze in the barrel/body while you paint the dark tones. Please let me know if this was helpful or not. And I wish you a nice and creative week.

These brushes are the best thing for working with water soluble color pencils. They have bristles that are stiff enough to push the pigment around on the paper and to lift and activate the dry pigment. If you want a great scrubber or lifter for dry paint, Caran D’Ache makes a brush pen with a marker tip that lifts better than a bristle brush and with less damage to the paper.

Thanks for the tutorial Judith! Brush pens are also useful when drawing with fountain pen ink. Since it’s water-soluble, you can create really cool effects by using a water brush on the drawing. I‘d like to see a video on how you service/clean/unclog water pens.

I tried drawing with water brush, but water simply didn´t flow enough and when i took a lot of color into brush and then squeezed to clean it, it sucked remaining color into water, contaminating it. 😞

There are complete sets of brush pens with pre-loaded paint...itps very intense paint, so you need to use with care, or mix on a palette, there's one water-only brush in the set, but you get some choice of how you use it, and don't need dry /tube paints.

These brush pens are a total game changer for plein air painting. Mine unscrew the opposite way as well which makes it a little difficult, but they still work well, they come in many sizes including flat square brushes. It doesn’t take long to learn how to manipulate the amount of paint or the placement on the paper, and the results are just amazing

For many years, I read and heard that they unscrew the opposite for two reasons. The first is that they are made in Asia. The second and more practical explaination is that they screw that opposite way because you won't accidentally unscrew it easily and spill water all over your work. As long as you know it happens, in the long run, you should not have any problems.
