You guys slayed them. Gotta take care of Pap! Spent several Fall mornings trolling for crappie with my Papaw before he passed. It was our favorite thing to do on Saturday mornings. We’d take a mess home and he’d freeze them for fish fries at his church. Great day of fishing in that overcast weather. So many beautiful crappie! Great episode!

What a day! Watching these summer pattern videos and trying to figure out how to locate them in this heat. I spent about 4 hours this morning running my pond prowler up fort loudon and hunting crappie. Found some docks in really deep water and spent an hour skipping a road runner under them. Not one crappie in sight😂🐟
@InItfortheLimit
@InItfortheLimit Жыл бұрын
My favorite docks are the ones that get close to the creek channel in coves I know hold crappie. If you can narrow it down to just those few docks, you can usually find crappie. I usually just shoot a jig as far back as I can and let it fall back to the boat on a tight line. You have to watch the line closely though, for any movement or sudden stops. I need to do a video on shooting docks.

Also… question…have you ever tried fishing an umbrella rig near a dam like that? I haven’t, but seems like those fish would hammer one of those.
@InItfortheLimit
@InItfortheLimit Жыл бұрын
Some buddies and I were talking about that a couple weeks ago. We caught close to probably 100 skipjack. We’d have 3 on at a time and the boat next to us would also have 3 on at the same time. Thought an umbrella rig would be crazy fun. I’ve not used one below the dam, but got into some white bass in Turkey Creek bass fishing and it was a blast.

Awesome trip, fellas! A buddy from work took me out on Melton Hill a few times and he had a similar setup to yours. Seemed like all those fish in that current were so powerful, even the small ones. Got lucky one trip and landed a 20lb striped. Between fighting the fish and navigating the dam current, sure gives a man a good workout. But the fish in those spots are amazing fun! Looking forward to the next episode.

We were fishing between 8-20+ feet, but most of our fish on this day came from that 17 foot range, I believe. If we could have gotten to the marina fish, we would have had several limits. I’ve done that before on marinas, but we just couldn’t get to them and had to chase fish holding to cover in more accessible water. Right now, you can tight line banks and have success. The reason I like fishing cover along the creek channel, whether it be brush, stakebeds, or even private docks, is because it’s a holding spot for crappie as they move up and also back out. If you can find the ideal spot along the creek channel, you can usually get a consistent bite, as the area will replenish itself. It’s like having a Bucee’s on the way in and out of the spawning area, lol. As it starts to warm, I’m typically looking in the 12-18 foot range. However, they are often holding at around 10 feet on whatever cover that is there.

Thx for your video! I heard you say you "might get a new ball for up front". If I may make a suggestion, look at the "Venzo bike repair stand" that bike mechanics use instead of a Ball mount. It will easily hold a 2" pole. And a 1 1/2" pvc pipe will fit inside a 2" pvc pipe with hardly any play... It's how I made my mount, fwiw. If I may, I'll explain how I build my pole mount. I made 2 actually because my Buddy needed a better one, so I made him one too. So I bought a 10' section of 2", and a 10' 1 1/2". I had 3' of 1" in my scrap that I used. I'll use 18" or so of it for handle, and 10" or so for the joining to the 1 1/2" pipe at the bottom to hold the Garmin mount. I needed: 1-Charlotte Pipe 1-1/2-in x 1-in 330 Psi Schedule 40 White Reducing Tee PVC Tee. Item #22737 Model #PVC 02400 5850 at Lowe's for my store price of $5.23. (I got 2 of them). This will go on the Top of the inside 1 1/2" pipe, and the 1" part of it I glued the 18" 1" handle straight into it. (works great). Your wiring will come out the top of this joint. Also need: 1-1 1/2" to 1" Bushing for the lowest part of the pole,,,Lowe's Item #23917 Model #PVC 02107 1150 for $2.27. Take this Bushing and glue it to a 10" or whatever piece of 1", and glue other end to the lower end of your 1 1/2" pipe. I also drilled a 1" or so hole above this Garmin 1" mount pipe in the 1 1/2" section. I then cut about a 9" long slot with a hacksaw leading out from this 1" hole. I put the Garmin connecting wire thru this hole,,,and out the Top end of the 1 1/2" pipe. 'How to clamp pipes and keep tension',,,I used a hose clamp from Autozone,,,Varese 1 3/4in to 2 3/4in EZ Hose Clamp 2 Pack Part # EZ36BK SKU # 862122 for $4.99. They are behind the counter,,on wall. Has a 'thumb screw' to tighen it. Ok, How do I get the 2" pipe to clamp tight to the 1 1/2"??? First I should should have said I made the 2" outside pipe 4' long, and I made the 1 1/2" pipe 5' long(sorry, that should have been first in the instructions). Cut some 1/4" slots about 3" long on the top of the 2" pipe. Make about 6 slots. I made them 1/4" wide or so, 3" long....and go all around the top of the pipe. I used a hack saw and a pair of pliers to twist out the little plastic slot waste. Your clamp will go over these slots and will tighten down against the 1 1/2" pipe is inside the 2" pipe, and the clamp will keep transducer snug. Buy a roll of camoflage Duct tape from Wally World, instead of painting it. I wrapped the camo tape around and around like a barber pole but can do it longways down the pipe is probably faster. I have $120 in parts in this build with the Venzo mount. I also built the second mount with a cheaper bike mount called 'Clothink' on Amazon for $37.99. There IS a problem with this one though; it will not quite open up 2" . I am having to build a little piece of wood about 1 1/4" by 2 1/2" x same thickness of clamp mounting and drill a couple 1/4" holes and add it to the clamping fulcrum part of this clamp. i.e. Ya gotta modify this thing to make it open up more than 2". The mod works though and this mount works just fine, and is $50 less overall cost. I have $70 in this build with the 'Clothink' model...or, you can go buy a fancy dancy one from Corn Pone? Crappie No Doubt About It is a good one,,,for sure, for $650 or so. Mine's camo and looks way, way better. Sorry, I don't do videos. Tooo old and don't know how, nor wanna learn. Can't take and post pics either. Ain't in it for the money,,,just helping out other poor boys like me. I hope you can figure this build out. Heck, I'm going to ask my local bait shop if he wants me to build him a few to sell for $200. Start a new business, huh.

Do you think that your setup will hold up while trolling at 2.3 mph?
@InItfortheLimit
@InItfortheLimit Жыл бұрын
It depends on what size RAM mount you are using. I have the 2” ball and it holds when trolling. I’ve had it up 5mph or so but the issue is spin of the pole usually. I have mine set to spin easily, but you can torque the ubolts to make a more snug fit. I’ve thought about making it to where I can lock it on place, but I’m usually scanning when trolling along looking for beds, so the handle is in my hand.

Could you give us bit of info rod length, line weight, water temp, etc.
@InItfortheLimit
@InItfortheLimit 2 жыл бұрын
The water temps were around 83 degrees and the creek channel underneath the marina is between 22-27 feet deep. As far as rods go, I use a 7 footer for most applications, but Shannon uses several rods between 9-13 feet. The longer lengths allow for reaching across to harder to access areas, but also require a bit of finesse in setting the hook and bringing in the fish. I think I just have 6lb Mr. Crappie Hi-Vis. I am not sure of the brand Shannon is using, as I think it is something he picked up at a fishing show in a large spool. However, it should also be 6lb and hi-vis. The neon line makes it easier to see bites if you are casting out and letting it swing or fall back to the boat. On this day, I’m using two 1/16 oz jigs (1/8 total). With the warm water and depths, I like a medium to fast fall. In the winter I might drop to a 1/16 total weight or a single 1/32. I still prefer a larger hook though.

The marinas around here won't give permission to fish. Maybe I just need to meet the right person.
@InItfortheLimit

Some of them will run you off. I’ve had some people stare me down at private marinas. In their defense, I’m sure they’ve had things stolen and perhaps property damage with people knocking jigs and lures off fiberglass boats. However, usually, I’ve had positive encounters with people. I try to be as invisible as possible and overly pleasant when someone does see me. At this marina in particular, people buy the slips instead of rent them. I’ve met some really great folks that are working and refurbishing their boats. I enjoy watching them remodel their boats and they enjoy watching me catch fish. Not every situation is like that though.

It’s a gray area here. While in some lakes, people do own the land under that water, all of the water is public use. In fact in Tennessee, if anyone tries to prevent you from legally taking game, they can be fined. However, the second you touch their dock or boat, you are trespassing. I try avoid areas where people take issue with it, but so far, have been fortunate. I fish a lot of private docks in the summer for bass and met a lot of nice people that way, but have encountered a few angry homeowners.
@MrWhiltetail
@MrWhiltetail 2 жыл бұрын
@@InItfortheLimit I think it depends where you are at. Where I live the marina can (and have) charge you with trespassing when you enter the marina because they own the rights to the water in that location. Sort of like owning the air space. The city marina in the next county lets you fish up to Memorial day which is nice but many won't allow you in there at all. I just need to meet the right people I guess, but I'm sure I can find other places to get some crappie. I guess I will see when I finish getting my boat ready to get back on the water.
