My local game shop got two copies of the core rules in stock, sold them both, and then didn't get any more ordered in before the game went OOP (to be fair, it did sort of happen without much warning) 🤣 I have been looking at Genesys supplement books for the past however many years; it's nice to have an introduction to how the game actually works.

It was based on a game. However, Gygax & Co created the game in order to live out their OWN Tolkien adventures. It was LITERALLY created from the books. So, I feel that the games, films and cartoons should be done in the spirit for which Gygax intended: To experience a personal Tolkienesque adventure, dedicated to serious high fantasy. However, I love your content. I'll have to watch a few more videos, but I may subscribe.

@@RevKev In 2024 they releases War of the Throne adventure for Twillight Imperium. I hear from people that it is really good but I have never read it myself. EDGE Studio is really bad at advertisement. I wish they just release some starter sets like DnD starter set with little adventure an a short set of rules - that would help them by a lot with game selling and promotion. Main concern I encountered with Genesys is that the book offer you a bunch of instruments to work on your own setting and game and 0 complete examples that will work out of the box. Like - I bought a book, what the hell, what do you mean I need to write my own world, items, enemies, what do you mean I can buy another book to read complete setting? Genesys had 0 (zero, none, null) official adventures up to 2024.

Where to start! This book felt rushed. It felt like the main story had been established with strong points but the filler between the beginning, middle and end were a series of repeated lines,over use of tas, flint basically did nothing than moan about being kept in the dark and tas. Raistalin about the test ect. The world also needed to be darker. Queen of darkness had no bite at all until the final battle (best bit in the book). Definitely felt like the stakes were not as high as it should of been. Destina... My least favourite character probably because she is up against the heroes of the lance which is unfair for her character development. While it was a good story, the end could have been a lot better (humility and content with the house given) instead the biggest lesson was not learnt as all was given back. I don't think its a terrible book as some have commented just a huge disappointment but thats what you get when you try to use time travel. Also kev, a few books of what you mentioned being defunct is in the end of the books to get (chaos wars not there).

@doomsmythe
@doomsmythe 2 ай бұрын
@@GreenbeltChurchOnline Those are board games. Not a Tabletop Miniatures game. Warhammer is a TT miniatures game that had a Role-Playing Game also. But much like Warhammer, Warhammer 40k, Crisis Protocol and a slew of others are exactly like MCP. So, in this case the "story" is "Can the X-Men defeat the Brotherhood." The closest thing to a story is a Campaign game where stats and such get changed around as you play. However, there is some really cool things on One Page Rules with the new Quest games. Totally free and uses any mini you want. Frost/Stargrave are also good for that. But at the end of the day, it's just a table, some terrain and a battle. You make up the story as you go if that makes sense. I have a Warhammer army that I made my own fluff for based on my paint scheme and such. So my army has a "story" but no real rules or anything special. I hope that makes sense. You kinda make it up as you go along with your buddies.

Here is what I wrote in the missing comment, its long but I had a lot to say on this trilogy: Great video, Kev. Overall, I agree for the most part about this book being okay. In general, I felt like Dragons of Eternity felt like a disappointment. Mostly cause I saw so much potential, the Alt-Krynn could've been such a interesting setting to explore but it ended falling flat. When it comes to the trilogy as a whole, looking back on it, I have a few thoughts. To start with Eternity, since that's the subject of the video, I felt like it tried too hard to ride on nostalgia and ended up lacking substance in many ways. The first of which, like I said before, was the disappointing missed opportunity in the alt-Krynn plot. If done differently, this plot could've taken Dragons of Eternity from a 5/10 to a 8/10 in my book. The basis for it was good, for the heroes of lance to distract the dark queen while an attempt was made to fix time. Imagine for a moment, instead of what we got, that events had played out different. Tanis and the companions, now have to face the dangers and unknowns of alt-Krynn. With Queen Tahkisis aware of their presence and the world firmly in her control, they'll need every trick and every bit of luck they can manage to stay one step ahead of the dark queen and her minions. Its a tense struggle, pushing our heroes to the absolute limit of their abilities(even full power Raistlin starts to feel the strain). Eventually, Kit and Skie manage to catch up to the companions. Kit, having been told about her fate in the original time line by the dark queen, stops at nothing to prevent them from succeeding. Her knowledge of the companions allows her to stage an ambush. The companions nearly face defeat at her hands if not for the last moment intervention of Paladine. Bringing them to Godshome, Paladine informs them that this is only a temporary respite. The heroes decide that they'll make their stand in Godshome, try to last as long as they can. The heroes prepare and eventually come face to face in an epic clash between Kit and the rest of Tahkisis' champions. They barely manage to succeed, but now it all comes to a final conflict with the dark queen herself. Though armed with the dragonlances, the companions realize that this isn't a fight they can win. Despite this, they pull together and will fight to the very end. Even if they only manage to buy a moment or two, that may be all that's needed to restore time. They succeed and the time is restored. This is what I feel we could've gotten from Dragons of Eternity. It could've been a very tense adventure, the bones of this were there but the execution just wasn't. The return of the heroes of the lance was nostalgic, which the whole book tried to coast on but I feel like it wasn't enough. I also disliked how Raistlin was used, it felt like he was just a glorified taxi driver for the companions, never getting the chance to show the absolute extent of his power. There was also the issue of characters of Bakaris, Kit, and Skie that just weren't themselves. Not only that, but the villains on the whole just never felt like you should fear them or presented any degree of competence, Which is such a disservice to Kit and Skie who are both excellent warriors(Bakaris is just a wholly different character in DoE). I'd like to add a nit-pick to yours about this book. I found it quite annoying, but how many times do we need to hear about the death of Huma and Gwyneth? Seriously, it gets repeated by different characters on five or six different times through out the whole first act. It really felt disrespectful to the reader, like we couldn't be counted on to remember this bit. The first time for recap, sure, why not. A recap from the villains perspective? Sure, I think its interesting to hear how the forces of darkness viewed those events. But after that, it either could've been summarized or left out. It was repeated excessively and I feel like whoever edited these books should've caught this. When it comes to the Destinies trilogy as whole, I felt like it was just disappointing as well. The major reason being that legends exists. Legends basically does the same story, but does it infinitely better. Part of that being due to a higher quality of writing overall and better characters. When it comes to the writing, it really was all over the place in Destinies. Dragons of Deceit was a mess, Dragons of Fate felt like an effort to course correct, and Dragons of Eternity had potential but lost it. Personally, I feel like Dragons of Deceit really poisoned the whole trilogy with how bad it was. When it comes to characters, its another stark contrast. The characters of Legends are all well written with good story arcs and a satisfying ending. The characters of Destinies are either uninteresting(or we don't spend enough time with them, like wolfstone), there for plot convenience(Alice Ranniker, a character that was entirely forgettable but is somehow getting her own book), or were just plain unlikable(Destina). The biggest contrast is between the main characters of each story: Caramon Majere and Destina Rosethorn. Caramon starts out as a hero who has lost his way, who has literally gone from hero to zero since we last saw him. Over the course of the Legends trilogy, we follow Caramon as he slowly rebuilds himself. Its a difficult journey, but eventually Caramon becomes stronger as a result. Caramon is a character you get invested in as you watch him grow as a character and the struggles that he goes through. Destina, on the other hand, is a character that starts poorly and fails to improve over the course of three books. In Deceit, she's literally the villain of the story. She lies, she steals, and worst of all: she is incredibly selfish. She dishonors her fathers sacrifice and continuously quotes the measure while making terrible choices that fly in the face of what it stands for. While you empathize with her initially due to the grief she's struggling with, it becomes impossible to empathize with her by the end of Deceit. Her actions leave such a bad taste which carries over into Dragons of Fate. She spends the whole book moping, but it does nothing to garner sympathy. Then in Dragons of Eternity, it just felt like the authors disliked her as well and kept her presence down to the absolute minimum. She's just a character that no one should get invested in, she is so thoroughly unlikable in these books and I'd argue she's easily one of, if not the worst, Dragonlance characters ever written. Now, I will say, I don't necessarily blame Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman for how Destina's character turned out. I strongly believe that Destina was not meant to be this way, that this wasn't the character they meant to write. The proof for this goes back to the lawsuit between Weis and Hickman vs WotC. In it, there is mention of the authors being pushed to make changes to the books and the characters by WotC. Now this sounds innocuous enough, publishers probably ask for changes all the time. But I don't believe this was the case, the lawsuit uses specific language to suggest that WotC pushed ideas that were heavily motivated by their internal politics and ideals(which is bad, cause WotC's extremely heavy handed on both). WotC I'd say is majorly to blame for why this trilogy had as many problems as it has. I think if Weis and Hickman had been allowed to write this trilogy without their interference, I think it would've been much better than it was. Anyway, that's my thoughts on the trilogy. I just wish it had been better honestly. I wouldn't recommend Destinies to anyone looking to get into Dragonlance personally.

I agree on all points, that last page about destina and Female knights really sealed the deal when it came to wotc interference. Not that I disagree with having a female knightly order it just felt glaringly obvious. It was also the constant rehash on things established in the first two novels more about tas and Magus rather than huma as you mentioned.
@mbt808
@mbt808 2 ай бұрын
@DrunkenDeer yeah, Destinas ending left me on saying “Wait, that’s her ending?”. It definitely an example of WotCs politics bleeding into the book. Touching on what you said about a female knights, I feel like it also steps on/ignores Lauranas contribution in dragons of spring dawning. Cause I thought she was the reason for the knighthood changing its stance due to her role as the golden general in the war of the lance. Also, something I forgot to touch on, but destina feels a bit like a Mary sue character. Even when she’s absolutely incompetent, she still basically succeeds easily through out the trilogy. She’s genuinely such a bad and unlikable protagonist, I’m using her as an example of what to avoid while I’m writing my own fantasy novel(part of a trilogy here, my first published works) here.

Couldn't disagree with your points - the dark timeline was too similar to the original events which didn't make sense, considering the huge difference of Takhisis winning the previous Dragon War and having a couple of thousand years head start on the "War of the Lance" when the characters returned. Having said that I thought the scenes with the Companions together were so much fun and brought tremendous nostalgia, making this a really enjoyable read for me. Cheers!

I ended up finding your video because I was looking for a used copy of the red box DMG to replace part of the old set that went AWOL from my youth. Nostalgia is a powerful drug. Politically I'm pretty hard left, so the gender of the warrior (jacked or no) isn't relevant to me. I think what's gross about the situation is WotC bullshitting as though they were there and presuming to say what's what when they had no part in the creation process. It's good to see the artist step up and speak for their own work. All that said I think this was a horribly botched opportunity that could have spoken for the soul of D&D and roleplaying. Why not both? If there is ambiguity to the identity of the warrior being a man or woman, why not create two versions? RPGs at the time weren't nearly as reliant on miniatures and the theatre of the mind was everything to me. That unseen figure could be anyone and that universality is at the core of the role playing experience. I guess I don't want to agree with Wizards or Elmore, but I respect his opinion and contributions to my fond memories more. Finally, if Hasbro-Wizards is going to produce commemorative minis of "iconic" have the decency to render them in pewter or resin, not in that rubbery trash. Make an STL and I could print it myself so it wouldn't look like shit I wouldn't waste my time painting. I paint minis as a wargamer, but as a roleplayer the theatre of the mind, where your own imagination fills the blanks matters most. Thanks for a run down memory lane.
