It might be true when two hikers meet that the heading uphill guy should have right of way, but it is often not practical for a guy running down a hill to try and stop and move aside so in that case I would say the runner should get right of way. It is also not always true that the heading uphill guy is in a groove and doesn't want to stop and brake his rhythm - they are often knackered and wouldn't mind a rest. I have heard both versions about who has right of way, and I would say it is a changing world with the rise of trail running, and these things maybe should be taken on an per case thing. Communication might be the right way.

Yes, I've seen many cases where hikers coming up trail have welcomed the rest and made the choice to step aside instead. I actually mentioned that but had to cut it to get the video down to 5 minutes. But, it's still the uphill hikers decision. Thanks for the comment!!!
@Johnjds
@Johnjds 17 күн бұрын
Nicely said, fully agree with all of them. For uphill right of way, it’s also a safety issue. The uphill person could fall backward if they stop (same like off-road vehicles), the downhill person has line of sight into danger. Also with entering or passing camping areas after dark, switching to red mode headlamp is always appreciated by everyone. 🙌🙌
@wellseasonedhiker

Appreciate the comment. Hadn't heard the "fall backward" one. Is that really a thing? But yes, for sure the downhill hiker has better visibility. The uphill hiker is probably looking at the ground.

Good point. I'm a bit surprised, after using the tent, why this became a "thing". It's a non-issue. Actually the tension created by the shorter cordage ensures a better inner pitch so I'd actually avoid adding more cordage or the inner would probably sag.
@durstongear

Thanks for the kind words and using our tent. Glad the first impressions are good. Here are a few replies on the topics you mentions: 1) Yeah it can be an inconvenience to find that metal tab for the inner corner. I haven't thought of a way to combine them that is light, elegant, and still works if you only pitching the inner ,but one solution I have seen people do is to tie the cords together for both metal tabs. An overhand knot with those will hold them together. 2) The cord across the vestibule should mostly be fine, but if it is an inconvenience you can remove it. The main purpose is to hold the pole corner is position when the fly is not there (normally the fly will hold the pole too). It does always help some to hold the pole corner in position, but if you're not pitching inner only you can remove it with no major downside. 3) Good point about the vent access. I thought about putting the vents on the doors where there would be easier access, but it complicates the doors and makes rolling them up not as nice. At the foot end you can open the small end zipper and reach the vent okay, but certainly at the wider head end it is harder. I probably wouldn't get out of the tent, but I would undo a few of the clips to drop the interior at that corner to reach the vent. Glad you're liking the tent, Dan

You should go for it! Definitely! Being a strong hiker will be a major factor. Durability is even more important. If/when I do it again, I'll be planning for fewer daily miles. Maybe I'll get up later and get to camp by 3 but that additional rest will help me avoid overuse injuries that seemed to pile up on me by the final few days. Next year I'm planning to do the SHR. Been dreaming of that for a few years now. That'll be a big test but the learnings from the JMT will be with me.

I think we must have missed each other by a week or so. In late July I did a clockwise version of a very similar loop, adding the Royce Lakes but skipping the section you did between Italy Pass and White Bear Pass by doing the boulder-hopping traverse from Dancing Bear to Italy. First time in Bear Lakes Basin for me, and I'm already planning how to get back. It's hard to describe just how deeply that place affected me -- I'm glad to hear you had a similar experience of it. Thanks for the beautiful footage!

Yes, Dancing Bear is the fast way in/out. I chose the long way around intentionally because I wanted to check out White Bear Pass and because I wanted to see Lake Italy again. Bear Lake Basin has always been a magical place for me. I had a number of fond visits there in my teen years. Glad you appreciated the video and that you feel the same about the basin. Hopefully the video brought back memories for you. 🙂

@@wellseasonedhiker I managed to make Dancing Bear longer and much more difficult than it needed to be -- probably would have done just as well going via White Bear and not letting the minor infamy of that one scare me off. Somehow in the course of repeating to myself on the way up "as you approach White Bear Lake, turn north and ascend a grassy ramp", I managed to turn it into "when you REACH White Bear Lake, turn north." The problem is that, by the time you've gone through that rock-walled chute down to the lakeshore, the only ascending route is up a very steep, very crumbly scree-and-sand slope with a lot of exposure and not much solid rock -- at the top of which, you look to your right and immediately see the 100% walkable ramp you could have ascended had you turned a hundred yards earlier. Lesson learned...
