So what prevents the nut unscrewing itself from the truss rod thread? The nut on my MIJ 80s strat just comes away from the trussrod, the nut thread is fine and i can tighten the trussrod but when I try to loosen it the nut unscrews

Hi! I am a drummer testing some bass VSTs. Haha. And therefore also going nuts with upgrading some Donner guitars and a bass. I just changed the strings and set the tross rod right and now I am on the string action... Long story short: I love bass slides. And I noticed that the E string are kind of like rattling when doing a slide. Especially when sliding up. I guess that is always the case, except for a very high string action? OK? Thanks for your content, mate!
@StudyBassАй бұрын
It shouldn't rattle in a distracting way, and some rattling might be a sound/tone you want. Sometimes the rattling can be a touch thing. Try to lighten your pressure while sliding. You have to find the spot with just enough pressure to preserve the pitch, but reduce the rattle. Also, watch how hard you pluck. Pluck too hard and the rattling increases. It could be a setup thing. I always recommend having the top guitar pro in town (they usually have their own shop) do a setup. Then you'll know what's possible and what to aim for when doing your own setups. Keep making music!

I am elated to get started and have enjoyed all the commentary and feedback from the Teacher 🙂. I am a transitioning guitarist to bass player. In general it is pretty easy. But I was fristrated with ringing notes making the sound muddy. I did a search for how to control that and landed here. Dude - you provided me the perfect lesson to work on. Hopefully I can master these techniques. Thanks a ton.

Great! I've had a lot of guitar player students. I always encourage them to think of the bass as a completely different instrument. Think of the bass more like a tuned drum than simply a low-pitched guitar. You might find you play it differently. Hopefully you check out the rest of the lessons on www.studybass.com. Keep me posted on your progress!

Playing for 4 years, coming from guitar, use 3 fingers and never use my pinky at all. Seems to never want to cooperate and reach anything useful so I never bothered. Now I think I need to watch this over and over and practice it slowly and see what happens.
@StudyBass3 ай бұрын
The pinky is very useful. With the frets further apart on the bass, using fewer fingers means more shifting. In fact, yet another finger would be handy since the chromatic scale spans five frets and many basslines are highly chromatic. Keep practicing. You'll pick it up quickly. Check out the lessons on studybass.com. Guitar and bass are very different instruments despite looking similar. I tell my guitar player students not to think of the bass as a low-pitched guitar, but as a tuned drum set. It's both really, but as a guitarist you need to shake free of the guitar idea and hear its function as a drum. Have fun!

I am glad I witnessed and read this commentary as I embark so timidly to learning how to play the bass guitar. The fretboard and the seemingly arduous task has completely frightened me but reviewing all the successes and comments gives me hope and confidence in the depth of leadership and learning provided by Mr. Pouska. I will begin the first initial lesson today. I am thankful I saw this site and the awesome commentary!!!!
@StudyBass3 ай бұрын
Great! Don't let anything scare you. The more you play, the smaller that fretboard becomes. It starts as a mess of random notes. But, as those notes organize into familiar patterns of sound, the randomness slowly disappears and the whole thing shrinks. Like most things, learning music is about showing up every day and doing some work. It takes time and consistency. It will happen if you show up. Keep me updated on your progress.

@StudyBass4 ай бұрын
I'll cringe if I rewatch myself. If I recall correctly, I was playing the notes of an Am7 chord (A-C-E-G) under a C major triad (C-E-G). As a fun exercise find a piano/keyboard and play a C major triad in the right hand, and then play different notes with the left hand to hear how the bass note alters the sound of the C major triad.

StudyBass has been with me since I started playing, and it's always been my main influence because it says "do this, because; don't do that, because" - just like that, straight to the eye. It's not easy nor fancy, and it doesn't promise magical fast results. Also, it reminds me of Mr. Miyagi (😅), because it may be a bit hard, but is also always trying to motivate the student. But the man behind the works is Mr. Pouska. Thanks a lot for this, man! I'm a kind of nightmare for all the teachers that I met, because I always find out they are actually guitarists playing bass. 😂

I learned when I explained to students the why of something they were more likely to do it. And, that's what I always wanted to know from my teachers. There's a plan and a reason for doing ______. Keep learning and playing, my friend. Thanks for your support.

This is a pretty detailed and an informative video. Thanks for putting it out. Doing the lord's work :) I’ve got an LTD H1001 FM with a stripped nut. I can’t get 4mm or 5mm hex Allen keys to fit into properly. (Manufacturing book says 4mm). I’ve ordered a gripper wrench from stewmac (4mm). I’ve seen videos of the wrench used to remove nuts but since this is a double action and the nut is weld to the rod, can the gripper wrench be used to adjust the rod for relief? I’m fine with living with the gripper wrench for the rest of my life if it does the job adjusting my guitar neck relief.
@StudyBass4 ай бұрын
Thanks! Yes, I think using the gripper all the time is doable.
