When the female (2nd one who entered and noticed the new changes on visit 3) was noticing the hole entrance she seemed to look at the camera like “thank you big monster for helping us”

Hi. It is very interesting for me. I am from Montreal, so we still have pretty cold weather over here. It is second year I build a few different bird houses starting last spring but probably I placed few of these houses too late while other ones are still not populated. To tell you true I am a bit disappoinetd. This year I moved one to differrent place but with a lot of birds around in rural area but as I checked a week ago it was still available. I suspect it its because I placed a plastic protection entrance tube to be sure squerrels and other predators will not destroy a nest. A week ago I placed another 4 bird house and up to now I do not have any information about bird visits. I hope they will. What kind of camera did you use to monitor birds?

Thanks for your comment Alex, unfortunately they left our nest last month :( after 30 days visit they decided not to stay. Other bluetits are coming in and out though, and I am planning to make a lesson video soon. I can give you some suggestions: -Turn the nest hole eastwards -Don't put it too high (2 metres is enough) -Hide it in a tree if possible. -Remove the bird feeders around the nest. Don't invite other birds to the nest area. -Nest hole is important, our blue friends left the nest after we enlarged the nest hole. Nest hole should be 25mm even if its tight for them, they know where to nest.

This is a wonderful video. Admittedly I've never looked for one showing how the birds choose a nest so this is the only set of videos like this that I've seen and I'm so impressed. I know the birds search a few nests in their region before making up their minds but didn't realise just how difficult they can be to please and this is a beauty of a nest box!!! Strange and a bit worrying that the birds seem to be a bit on the large size for the size of recommended hole. I've a set of 3 special wooden look-alike nest boxes made from sort of recycled tyres I believe which I bought for house sparrows and which I've hung together but I've never had any success, the few sparrows we have nowadays still preferring to nest somewhere under the horse roof. So my husband has altered one of the holes to hopefully encourage another pair of blue tits. Another one he has left for possibly great tits (will have to check the size they prefer as it might be to large) and one he has made a lot smaller and made into a "slit" style to hopefully persuade coal tits to nest. I know these birds, unlike sparrows, won't all nest so close together but I'm hoping one pair might use one of these boxes sometime. They've been up for years with no success but our garden doesn't really face the best way. I've noticed that a blue tit has begun to build a nest in our fancy non-wood nest box (can't remember what the combination of ingredients are but it feels like stone) so the male and female have obviously gone through their ritual of choosing but I still didn't realise how fussy they are. We had a pair of nesting blue tits a few years ago but the male must have been dropped on his head as a chick as he seemed to keep forgetting where the nest was. The female often had to follow him around begging for food and he just couldn't seem to see her. And it wasn't as though he was a frequent visitor at the nest either. Felt a few times like shouting "she's behind you" as he would fly around aimlessly as though stoned out of his tiny brain! Needless to say, with her having to try to feed the chicks on her own, the nest failed. Shuggy, as I called him, seemed to visit the nest more often after Esmerelda had abandoned it than he did while she was trying to keep their chicks warm! There had been at least some live chicks but their twitterings sadly didn't last for long with so useless a father. Hoping your nest is successful as this pair do seem to be very thorough. I'll be tunning in to watch with great interest as they build their nest and raise their family. Thanks so much for making these magnificent videos. I've only watched about 4 so far but will catch up in the next few days so I've an idea of what is going on in my nest. Moira

Is that thing in the middle of your garden where there are people walking about? If so bluetits might think twice, they scarper from the birdfeeder every time I head out the back door and that's like 7 metres away. Maybe move it somewhere more secluded and higher up
@LifeInTheNest7 ай бұрын
Our garden isn't very large, but it's located behind the house, and there aren't constantly people around. The nest is about 3.5-4 meters high above the ground, but of course, bluetits can still spot us from the windows of the house. Unfortunately, there's not much we can do about that. The only thing that worries me is that this pair might be visiting other alternative nests in the area, as they visit ours very rarely in the second half of the day.

I wish there was an easy way to tell the birds apart. Is it always the same one and just occasionally an additional one? Is the pair alternating? We need rings!

We're keeping our fingers crossed, waiting to see when they'll start building. Maybe they won't do it at all, considering there are other alternative nests around. They've been visiting non-stop for 30 days now, but haven't taken any steps yet.

The Female will decide, she will try to work out when is the best time to coincide with lots of caterpillers, It's my theory they keep an eye on trees budding and growing leaves as well as weather patterns. When the Female does a nesting shuffle there will be an explosion in nest building. (On Day 20 you can see the male do a nesting shuffle it is really unusual for a male to do a nesting shuffle, so these 2 are an interesting pair to say the least).

I've noticed that in all the videos, the burr/splinter on the entrance seems to be annoying them, they seem to be trying to remove it without success
@LifeInTheNest7 ай бұрын
It looks like that, but that little piece is very soft, I checked it with my finger after enlarging the hole, you can see it in previous videos. Even if you build them a perfect nest, they will come and linger like this, they instinctively think they are building a nest.Let them remove it themselves and be happy.

What an informative video. Some birds will always peck the nest box. The male has to get the box to the female's specs. In this case they maybe removing any sharp edges, it looks like a new nest box. Once the hatchlings are in full swing the adults will be going in and out of that entrance 100's of times a day.

3:40 and 4:03 are timestamps of the two birds respectively perched on the entrance hole, notice the more prominent white tail markings on the second bird. First bird behaviour in the box is typical of a female, with plenty of nesting shuffles and checking the inside of the box thoroughly, second bird more interested in the entrance hole (or doesn't like the hole size!)

They probably won't make a decision until the weather warms up a bit, as they want to time the hatchings to occur when there is a population explosion of green caterpillars (they feed their chicks a very wide variety of critters, but the green caterpillar is the preferred grub).
