i added the same ram but i still cant get it to use all 12 gigs it shows 12 under cpu-z and mem-xp in bios but bios says only 8gb installed

Try the link to dell problem solving page, try reseating the memory, and then seeing if the memory ratio is set correctly. I would not try the feedback on page one resetting BIOS and CMOS, this is very complex.

Has anyone tried a motherboard swap in one of these? While x990 is nice and all with 6 cores, 12 threads, the damn thing is showing its age pretty noticeably. Found one of these beasts on the side of the road. The closed loop was dry, and some of the bells and whistles didn't work that great anymore. Took it apart, cleaned and greased everything I could, replaced closed loop with a beefy ThermalTake air cooler. The restoration didn't turn out perfect, but it's a damn impressive-looking machine. Upgraded the CPU from 920 to x990, memory from 6 to 12gb, GPU from Radeon 6950 to R9 390x, and added an SSD. Except for the memory, which could technically be 24gb (but it refused to work with the kit I ordered) I'd say this is "as far as it would go" for the original(ish) hardware.

The BIOS version is A10, all the latest drivers etc are available from the dell support website, there are some preset CPU overclock settings, but I have just left everything in default, I would not recommend changing settings in BIOS unless you know what you are doing

How did you get to 24gb ram? Windows 10, cpu: intel i7 980x 3.33ghz, 1100w psu, GTX 980Ti 6GB, 16gb ram(Corsair Vengence (+8gb not seen/working)), 1TB SSD, 128GB SSD, x3 HDD 3TB seagate, 300GB rapter HDD (10.5TB approx)

Got one from a local guy for about $50 in parts trade. Added an SSD and a shiny new 4TB hard drive. The drive bays are on the opposite (right) side of the chassis and they give you full access to a plug-and-play drive bay system.
