SADLY, HONDA JUST MADE THE PILOT FOR 2 YEARS, 1989/1990. I USED TO WORK FOR A HONDA/KAWASAKI DEALER IN SAN DIEGO AT THE TIME. DEALER COST FOR A 1990 HONDA PILOT BACK THEN WAS $5,150.00. THAT WAS A TON OF MONEY BACK THEN AND RETAIL WAS I BELIEVE MAYBE $6,300?? BACK IN 1989 WHEN AMERICAN HONDA BROUGHT A COUPLE OF BIG RIGS AS WELL AS A DOZEN OR SO BRAND NEW HONDA PILOTS OUT TO THE SAND DUNES AT BUTTERCUP FOR A PUBLIC TEST RIDE. THEY HAD A SET COURSE SET UP WITH A BIT OF SLIGHT DUNES, WHOOPS AND SOME HARD PACK. HONDA HAD A GUY IN THE FRONT PILOT AND WE ALL FOLLOWED HIM LIKE DUCKS SPREAD APART. I REMEMBER BEING IN COMPLETE SHOCK WHEN HITTING THE BUMPS AND THE WHOOPS. I THOUGHT I WAS GONNA BOTTOM OUT,CRASH OR DAMAGE THE PILOT WITH HOW FAST I WAS GOING BUT IT SOAKED OUT THE TERRAIN LIKE IT WAS NOTHING. IT WAS LIKE NIGHT AND DAY COMPARED TO THOSE OLD HONDA FL 350’S. THOSE DAYS, I WAS ON A CR250 DIRT BIKE AND ALSO HAD A 1987 FOURTRAX 25OR AND THEY WERE BOTH AMAZING. I RODE THE CR IN THE DAY AND SWITCHED TO THE QUAD AT NIGHT SINCE IT HAD A LIGHT AND WAS A BLAST TO DRIVE IN THE DUNES. MY CR250 ALSO HAD A PADDLE SO IT WAS FINE IN THE DUNES, JUST HARDER TO RIDE OVER QUADS. THE PILOT WAS SO MUCH FUN AND EVEN AT THE SUPER HIGH PRICE FOR THE 1980’S, THEY SOLD WELL. PRESENT DAY, I HAVE A 4 SEATER POLARIS XP1000 NOW AND LOVE IT. I CAN’T IMAGINE GOING BACK TO THOSE 80’S OR 90’S OFF ROAD BIKES NOWADAYS BUT BACK IN THE DAY, THEY WERE AMAZING. HELL BACK IN THE 1970’S, SOME OF THE 3 WHEELERS DIDN’T EVEN HAVE FRONT SUSPENSION. BOY DID WE SURE IMPROVE THINGS.

i owned one back in the early 90's only made in 89 and 90, were just too expensive for the time, $7500 when a dirt bike was still around $1400 bucks, even by todays standards they are still badass, sure regret selling mine, it was the only one in raleigh nc that i knew of, never saw another riding or elsewhere during that time.

Those transmissions sucked ass. No wonder they quit making them. Listen to that thing, drive you insane with that howling wide open monotone all day long. All belt transmissions suck. Id put a CR500 motor in it like a shifter kart, chain drive. Looks like a sweet race though.

I liked the way the 1st Odyssees had the gas trigger instead of that thumb throttle! I hate thumb throttles they cause too many cramps:P I would have to do some engineering to change that throttle set up!

This has been the best ride that I've ever been on. Thanks for sharing! I would love to have one of these but I fear that they are hard to find or get parts for. I've been looking at a few of em on market place. They look real nice but again that fear gets in my way. Have you had to have work done on yours? If so how'd it go?

Owned one for 8 years, There reliable and the drivetrain is over built for the amount of power they have. Parts are easy to find but $$$ still i don't see you needing to replace much on one.

Hello, I race against all of the new stuff, they are way fast. If the course is rough enough I can beat them, or at least for now, there suspensions are advancing so far I am sure my days are numbered on being able to run with them on even the roughest of courses.

Hey Steve, You probably know and have already replaced them by now, but just incase you don't and haven't, your engine's crankshaft seal or seals are leaking. Air is being sucked into the crankcase through them. That's why it takes a while for the engine's rpms to drop down to an idle. That means the engine's always running lean. Not a good thing for a 2 stroke engine. Hope you've replaced them and are still out there enjoying your 4 wheeled red rocket.
@dormantmenace
@dormantmenace 5 жыл бұрын
Or maybe it's just running lean on the idle circuit via to small of slow jet or most commonly poorly adjusted air fuel screw. You back that screw out even an 1/8 to 1/4 to much the idle is gonna hang when you roll of the trottle. there could be a carb boot or Reed cage leek. Cover your bases don't jump straight to the crank seals. Or do a leakdown test.

My Dad bought 15 of these and opened up a dirt race track east coast PEI (more sand than dirt) in the 80s. People signed waivers and rolled them every day. Luckily nobody ever got hurt in the few years it ran. It helped that he tuned most of them down. On the weekend we would load a few of them up on the trailer and my brother, mother and dad would camp at the beach and ripp around on the sand dunes, swim in the ocean and BBQ all day. We'd stay overnight in the winnebago, it was awesome; such a simpler time. There were no cell phones either.

@dhebert111
@dhebert111 5 жыл бұрын
@@jkreviea No, we didn't in those days. It was around 1985'ish. I'm sure they existed but they were rare. I remember dad getting a "bag phone" a few years later. We thought those things were game changing, and it turns out that they were. Those bag phones had a much better signal than the new folding ones or even the Nokia for a long time, they were hard to beat.
