Looks like you are making some progress on the cooling. I noticed how you keep your feet off the brakes on landing and most taxing. I suppose the nose wheel arrangement is more forgiving, but I've only flown taildraggers, and having to reposition your feet if you need brakes all of a sudden would eat your lunch in a hurry in the taildragger. If you're staying off the brakes so they don't engage cause they lean to far back, maybe you can lower the clevises on top of the master cylinder rods so the brake pedals lean further forward. Of if you have clearance for the master cylinders at the firewall, lengthen the rudder cables to the next hole on the cable adjuster pates, and that will allow the rudder pedals to lean further forward. Maybe a bit of both will get you what you need.

@@jimchuk8511 I dislike the brakes pedal angles. It’s always been something I figured I’d get to eventually. You’re correct about my brake use. I don’t need/use them much in any airplane I fly.

I've never ran a 583, but had 582s in three Avids. I'm not sure why you feel the need to run it for so long on the ground and get it real hot before you ever take off. Isn't 130 or so minimum temp for full throttle operation? Some times it helps to lower the radiator about an inch so it catches more air flow as well. Looks like removing the bottom piece of the cowl helped some. Was wondering if you were going to fly again to see if temps stayed in line after that. Air flow at flying speeds will cool much better than just the prop blast when it's sitting on the ground. With the 582, max temp was only 180 and as I understand it, it's because of the plastic bearing cages used in the engine. Wonder if the 583 uses the same type. Interestingly, the 532 had a higher allowable temp, but it didn't use those plastic bearing cages. Keep up the videos, have fun and fly safe! Jim

@@jimchuk8511 the limitations in the Avid and Rotax manuals we have with our plane 200° F max water temp. When we did the motor I don’t remember any plastic or teflon type bearings. When I did the engine break in it never overheated. It started overheating when we put the cowlings on. I flew two very short flights with the cowlings on and unmodified and it shoots up to and beyond 200° in a hurry. After trimming the air dam on that lower cowl, cooling problems seem to be solved. This engine is maintaining 180° much more consistently than the 582 did. So far. I flew it 1.1 yesterday with about 10 cycles and no temp problems, except one full power run up. Why full power run-up’s? Just the idea of cold seizures. Frankly, Rotax Rick recommends it to assure all the moving bits are at their operating temps. Not saying I prescribe to that doctrine but I must at least to some degree. A new video for yesterday’s flying is forthcoming. I plan to leave the pattern tomorrow and fly 50 miles out or so. 🤞

Good job Jake handling your cooling problems. I am sure you will work it out. My friend has a Avid with 582 (project) that may have to deal with the same problems. I am still on the ground after a fuel pump forced off field landing 2 weeks ago with my Quicksilver MX - Rotax 447. No damage, I didn't push and try to cross the cattails to return to my grass strip but 7 hour recovery across cattail swamp. We have had the last couple weeks of no flying with dense smoke and ash fall from forest fires 80 miles away. Another friend has a 582 powered plane I fly, it goes to and stays nicely at 170F.

I just went through this with a new 582 in my early model Kitfox. In order to get through the Rotax hour long break in procedure I had to drive a ground stake with hose nozzle zip tied to it, set to mist the radiator. It worked well and I got through the ground runs without needing to shut down to cool it off. I replaced the (very) old rubber donut between the engine and gearbox which made a remarkable difference in idling below 3000 RPM. Also replaced the original 6 psi radiator cap with current spec 13 psi which also helped cooling.

5-10 minutes of ground running even at rpm WILL make it overheat!! I work on lots of 582’s on PPC’s. And while syncing the carbs I have to be careful to not ground run more than 5 minutes or so. That kink in the hose is not enough to cause problems. Though the hose might fold a bit but as it collapses it flattens and gets wider so it is really reducing flow? 🤷
@j-dubya4510 күн бұрын
The more I think about it, I don’t think that’s always true. Eventually the passage starts becoming constricted until it’s complete blocked, such as a full kink.

I expect to fly this airplane for the first time with this engine today or tomorrow. We have 5+ hrs of ground run time on it. Been having trouble with cooling. Mostly air bubbles I think.

Did you just recently purchase it. What is the price range. ? Runs ruff. Do fuel air adjustments. If necessary, clean carbs completely put in new diaphragms. Adjust idle and high-speed jet screws.. Check and replace carb to engine boots . They get old stiff and will leak air. Put on new diaphragm vacuum fuel pumps. Try different jets if that fails. Nice aircraf.
@j-dubya4517 күн бұрын
I don’t know the price yet. It’ll be somewhere between $17-25k. Carbs are good. Boots are relatively new. It probably could use some syncing at idle, however, I’ve never known it to run much different other than the RAVE. I’ve been flying this exact plane since 1991-my parents built it. I have about 150 hrs in it.

Having owned many Skidoo engines over the years especially the 583 its hard to find a decent primer anymore, most of the Chinese versions crap out after just a year. I'd suggest finding a high quality primer or a different style as you dont want the leaking gas from the primer blowing back all over you in the cabin! Smoke is good, you definitely want to see that on a 2 stroke no smoke, and your going to seize that engine quickly.

Fuel is mixed 100:1 AND it has oil injection. It was smoking more at the end of today, and during subsequent runs. Furthermore, a few other “adequate oil” signs: My jacket smelled like a two stroke, Oil was dripping from the spark plug holes after sitting for 24 hrs (engine mounted upside down). In the past (I have hundreds of hrs of experience with this aircraft and its previous two-stroke) oil didn’t work its way down to the spark plug holes for several days. It is getting plenty of oil.
