Rather good performances, but the commercial interruptions in the middle of musical phrases is maddening. There are ways to tell KZbin when to place an advertisement. I'm moving along. This isn't worth listening to if I must constantly run to the computer to click to skip a random ad.

"April 7, 1739. I am returning to Osnabruk from Dresden, where I had met with Herr Schmidt concerning our interests in Bavaria. This carriage ride seems to take forever. Why is the road to home always bumpier than the way to business? We shall stop for a meal soon, at one of our state's excellent taverns, but for now, I have this tobacco to pass the time. How the air is fragrant with cornflower and sunshine. But.. the clouds, they come swirling in , like curious ghosts, playing hid and seek with their own shadows. I miss my family, but we are only a day away. Soon, my love, we will see each other again. "

7. April 1739.

There are elements of this music that I feel Phillip Glass may have used for his interpretation and orchestration of the soundtrack for Koyaanisqatsi, 1982. That being said, Handel's use of mechanicals and call and response in this piece is amazing. The motif I hear is that of a pastoral introduction, moving inward, to reveal the layers of the court and palace, slowly evolving into a broader, grandiose vision of European culture and society of the time. The second movement reveals more emotional ties, to what, is not quite clear, but for me, as a listener in 1989-1990, it evoked Autumn, and a sense of "moving on to the next thing" in a life that had just started it's 2nd stage, young adulthood.

@@dominiekschrijvers1424 You've both tapped into an area outside of my expertise, so I can't add to your comments. It may be useful to know why your opinions on Herreweghe's conducting style tends toward apathy, so that we may be better informed. My view is that this interpretation is basically flawless, and immensely moving - so I would have to give Herreweghe much credit for that.

As England steadily gained control of Ireland, Grace came under increasing pressure to relent to the English crown. An expedition from Galway attacked Grace in her castle on Clare Island, so Grace turned to piracy, blockading the port of Galway and attacking English ships in Galway Bay.

I've never seen the combination of this particular group of soloists at another concert. Herreweghe works nowadays with a totally different group of soloists. I've asked Collegium Vocale Gent in the past if they are planning to release this performace on DVD in the future. It is also my favourite version. They want, but they can't. They answered that they asked multiple times if the WDR (Westdeutscher Rundfunk), whom made this recording and has the rights, wants to release it to the public or otherwise give the rights of the recording to Collegium Vocale so they can release it. But the WDR won't do it. Hopefully Collegium Vocale will keep trying. Propably because they want to broadcast the recording themselves. Just last week I read that the WDR will this year broadcast this performance on the morning of Good Friday.

@@alexfetchina9416 Sure, no thanks. I live in the Netherlands. Here we can receive the WDR on our tv's. Sadly, in this case, I can't, I don't have a normal tv. I also have to find an alternative way to see it. It is also rather early for a programme as this. It starts at 07:45 hr (German and Dutch timezone). With some of the soloists he worked for a longer period, like Damien Guillon (first countertenor), and the sopranos Hanna Blazikova and Dorothee Mields (with whom he still works). But except fot this performance I'v never seen him work for example with Christoph Pregardien (evangelist) and Robin Blaze (second countertenor). In this respect this performance was a exception. I can really recommend the 1999/2000 recording of Herreweghe. It is also very good. It is the one I have on cd. In a few weeks I will attent a live performance of the St. Matthew Passion, directed by Herreweghe and sung by Collegium Vocale Gent.
