Hi Rolf, lovely video here. Was just wondering if you would have any specific advice to end up at the place you in now? I'm very interested in your data science/ml role in GI pricing - would love to hear any specific advice you may have for someone looking to achieve the same!

Hi, thanks for the comment. It depends on where you are now? Do you currently have a related role, or are you a grad? My first role was a related support function in an insurance company as a "foot in the door" job and then made moves across.

@vidsfromrolf I'm based in Sri Lanka and I'm currently in a life insurance actuarial role - just graduated last summer. Looking to hopefully be in a GI team soon (grad schemes aren't a thing here) but it's a bit tough since GI actuaries are very small in number here. My partner is a citizen in the UK and the plan is to make a move there eventually - hence would love to know any specific advice you could give for progressing into a role you have now!

2 SPs and an SA in the same session. This is not average in the slightest.

I think taking the two GI SPs in the same session is relatively common - their first 10 chapters were each the same. I was then advised that between that learning and my industry experience I may as well give SA3 a shot and was very fortunate that it came off for me!

If you didn't work while doing exams, how many would you recommend studying for at once?
@vidsfromrolf
@vidsfromrolf Жыл бұрын
Masters programmes have equivalent all the UK core non applied in one year so I guess could be achievable if you treated it as a full time thing. Would probably not recommend trying to do beyond prelims without work experience

@@vidsfromrolf I've completed a batchelor's in mathematics (with a focus on statistics and OR) and I've had 7 weeks work experience at an actuarial firm. I have a gap of 1 year before I start work and am planning on passing some exams. I currently have 3 exemptions from my degree. The question is more, how many exams (of the 10 remaining) would you recommend trying to pass in this period?

Hi Fikile I got my job without any exams which isn't uncommon here in the UK. I got it by getting a role in a related support team first and then moving across.

20 study days a year????? How did you pass in 3 years, 0 exemptions and so few study days? I get 45. How much did you study outside these days?
@vidsfromrolf
@vidsfromrolf 2 жыл бұрын
was 4 years rather than 3 - a lot of my own time was spent studying, in the build up to the exams would be most of my spare time.

Personal lines insurers, especially in pricing departments, might value a data science skill set. So that might be worth a try as a route in. (I have taken the reverse of this path)

@@thehardlife5588 The study scheme was offered as part of the role - rather than something I suggested. Try going through recruiters. Alexander Williams is one that I''ve worked with before that specialises in Pricing Data Science. LV= are recruiting lots of pricing analysts at the moment, although don't think they offer actuarial study in that role - in favour of MSc in DS

@Rolf Britten How to get employment in the industry. The types of specializations explain. What an actuary does on a day to day basis. How to choose which 3xams to start with. The changes that have been made to exams and the curriculum. Work based learning or whatever it's called. What each kind of exam is like. Actuarial salary. Which fields have higher prospects. Which places in England have higher prospects. How is work life balance. What you should know before you think of becoming an actuary. Can actuaries be replaced by robots. These are some topic examples

Hey great video! I am appearing for CM2 this April but I have like 9 chapters still pending due to work. These 9 chapters are not that important to the syllabus in terms of weightage so what would be the correct way to study for the exam?
@vidsfromrolf
@vidsfromrolf 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Kunal, I never took any of the new curriculum prelims so can't give any specific advice and take this with a grain of salt... I would say prioritise reading through and making sure you understand the chapter summaries (perhaps making recordings you can listen to while working as a time efficient way to learn them...?) Then as we're about a month from the exams I would recommend really focusing on past papers / Q&A bank and targetting any studying on areas that you've identified as weaknesses through those. Hopefully that should give an appropriate weighting for your study effort

Hey I’m building a pc very similar setup to yours. Was wondering how much was everything with tax, how much FPS are you getting in games, and is there any problems/limitations with your setup?

Thanks for your comment. I've added a parts list with the prices I paid to the video description. I'm from the UK (assuming you're from US from your tax comment :) ) so my pricing may be a bit different CheerI've been using my old 1080p 60hz monitor so have had everything capped at 60fps - but I've generally managed to keep 60fps on max settings on all the games I've played so far. s, Rolf
