I have been there and cried buckets watching the re-enactment on the surround screen,I had to leave,just too hard to watch the mass slaughter.We need to think and remember how much we fought and died for out beautiful wee country.Look what they are doing to it now...Glad Sturgeon has gone, now we need someone who will work hard, take control and make us proud again.🏴🏴🏴❤❤❤🏴🏴🏴👍

I can still remember seeing this battlefield in 1985. It was a cold and rainy day with the raindrops hitting the clan markers that stood as memorials to brave men. They are examples of how important it is to preserve memorials.

I read 'The Flight of the Heron'' trilogy at school, so was thrilled to visit Culloden years later. The song 'Flower of Scotland ' tells of it and to walk through the woods and see the markers is really sad. The Lonach Highlanders now add a new dimension to that history, I'm just waiting for Hollywood to put them all together - what a wonderful film that would be.

Never mind the clashing of "swords and bayonets", it was the canister (lead balls) fired by canon at close quarters that literally mowed down great swathes of men, reducing them to piles of dismembered pulp. It is nothing to be "proud" about. Rather, it is a pathetic indictment of human stupidity, destined to repeat itself over and over ... at Gettysberg ... on the Somme ... etc etc. We are eternal assholes, not heroes!

Tired of hearing english history versions of the of culloden battle clan Cameron broke cumberlands right flank lord George Murray single handed fought through c umberlands right flank leading clan Cameron clan Cameron the best fighters in the British isles who also defeated Cromwellsl forces outside fort William when english historians talk about Scottish history they are really talking about english politics they say the Irish can tell good stories the english are better at it

You do realise this battle was part of a wider conflict across the continent? It wasn't English Vs Scot as most nationalists want to believe.

@@skylar7740 it was a fight against the union and whats a nationalists either your scottish or not
@stevezodiac4912 жыл бұрын
@@daviddaly6419 it wasn't, it was a fight to put a Catholic on the throne of England and Scotland instead of a protestant head. The Jacobites were made up from many English as well, particularly from Lancashire and the North West of England.
@lesterjohnston8888 Жыл бұрын
@@stevezodiac491 it's the picts I'm interested in they were from Shetland down to Orkney all the pictish sites on the East Coast what was called pict land and down to Lancashire it was the king that was called scot so when the tribes United called it Scotland, anyway i am from. The pictish tribes the picts will never die in me. You called them English, but the heritage is pictish because they lived in what its now called Lancashire and i have the evidence

The highlanders were not fighting for Scotland, they were fighting for the Jacobites to overthrow the legitimate British government. More Scots fought for the Government at Culloden and they gallantly faced the highland charge and, thankfully prevailed, thus preventing a horrific repeat of ‘divine rule’ - which led to the Glorious Revolution of 1688. The highlanders were duped by Charles E Stuart and fought gallantly. The penalty for treason in 1746 was death, which is one reason they were pursued by British (Scots, Welsh and English) forces after the battle. This song, lovely though it is, is historically incorrect and dishonours the heroism of the redcoats who faced the charge.
@alistairbain61493 жыл бұрын
It is arguable that James Francis Edward Stuart was the legitimate monarch. He was in the direct line from his father James II and VII. Further, no argument can be made to excuse the Butcher’s atrocities after Culloden.
@reality-cheque3 жыл бұрын
@@alistairbain6149 Following a bloody civil war, there was partial 'democracy' in 1688, so the monarch was, whoever parliament decided he/she should be. Since Cromwell, English and British monarchs have ruled by consent, not divine right. There's little factual evidence of Cumberland's 'atrocities'. Treason carries the death penalty which may explain why many of the wounded were killed after the battle. Records show that 3,471 Jacobites were taken prisoner, of which just 120 were executed (1/3rd being British deserters). About 1,000 were released and 1,000 were deported. Some 400 were exchanged for French PoW's and the fate of about 700 is not known but they are thought to have escaped and returned to the Highlands (Government embarrassment precluded recording this). The factual records do not support "the Butcher's atrocities" although I'm sure there were many injustices.

It was also part of a larger conflict across the continent. There's a guy on here (Scotland History Tours) who tells the real story about this battle. It's not this mythology that it's Scots Vs English.
