bio of one panelist: "... reported from (names various countries) ... Palestine ...". No such country. Effete elites (especially secularized liberal Jews) in Manhattan affirming it is so is a hilarious acting out of the plot of Submission.

Transposing the common idiom of his time into literature is one of Houellebecq’s chief accomplishments. Or as these cloistered academics put it, “writing stupid.”

Excellent interviews. The only thing Anabel Hernandez mentions that is different from what I remember while living in tijuana in the 90s is the zetas. Los zetas existed in the 90s except back then, they were not a separate organization but rather worked as “enforcers”for the cartel until they broke away and became their own organization in 2010. I’m sure Hernandez was referring to them not existing as a separate organized group before their break away.

Mikics characterizes the episode in the lab in Percy's novel rather narrowly (at best) if he is implying that it is a celebration of distraction. Let us hope that it is his interpretation of it as a younger man that he is questioning. But he offers excellent observations.

You guys in the comments don't understand the point of the book, Houellebecq is definitely not directly criticizing Islam, it's almost as if he wonders if an Islamic change is necessary in Europe for a better life for the average man despite the fact he will be in a state of "submission' and giving up many freedoms. If anything, ge is criticizing the way Western culture has progressed to this point.
@spritualelitist6652 жыл бұрын
Yeah some part of him is very reactionary. He doesn't like liberalism like myself but we do see a rise of nationalism in Europe especially in France which understands this issue. Islam has always been right wing but I feel it doesn't fit Europe. It's not what we are. But we are not liberals as well.

Sylvia Nasar has really bought into the " chemical imbalance " theory. Psychiatric drugs do not produce better long term outcomes. www.madinamerica.com has research to confirm this. Open Dialogue is being to be used in many countries and after 30 years of experience they find that after 2 years 80% are not using these drugs and they are working.

"the mental-health’ industry was not established to support people, but to individualize and medicalize the social misery created by capitalist rule.” Susan Rosenthal (2019). Rebel Minds
@thefuture1892 Жыл бұрын
hi, how are people individualised through the process? also does it benefit the society to medicalize the social misery, otherwise known as mental illness. If so how does it effect these people? Are there other motivations for this course of action? monetary gain? control of social dialogue? establishments created for prestige of individuals valued over correct course of action? who is the benefactor? unrelated but my skeptical mind with the ability to see how much I do not know is a common recipe for people to assume incorrect self believes of myself. Their minds disgust me

Why is there no mention of who he stole the subject and title from. What the Foucault, you guys?
@gfb67454 жыл бұрын
did you even watch it? he specifically says that he took Foucault's title ironically to mean madness in civilisation as opposed to madness and civilisation because he recognises that they are not a contrasting phenomenon, and are instead aligned with freudian concept that madness and sanity is a continuum.
@kyuubi23octopus4 жыл бұрын
@@gfb6745 you're 100% right. That said, outside of the semantic distinction, there isn't really so much untreated ground as it's mostly a history lecture. I still think it's a bit disingenuous that Foucault isn't cited at all until well into an hour long video when his influence is pretty obvious. I honestly stopped watching after 40 min and probably skipped around afterwards.
@kyuubi23octopus4 жыл бұрын
this comment is way less humorous 2 months after the fact, I have to admit. I thought "what the Foucault" was pretty clever at the time. It's pretty cringe with new eyes lol -- especially given that they actually very much did mention Foucault. #YTdrunkdials
