Love DT but the vocals were largely a letdown. His voice can sound good, but his melody choices seem to ruin the vibe.

I'm coming back to DT after almost a 15 year break. I fell out with them after I delved deeper into heavier music and I'm finally turning back to them and my guitar is improving now I'm playing through their stuff from Images and Words. Listening to The Shattered Fortress and man... really really great composition and mix of all those classics from their previous albums. Great throw backs to all of Portnoy's songs. Really good stuff. Going to have to add that one to the list of DT songs I need to master.

One thing that pisses me off about the suite as a package is that the end was supposed to bring it back to the beginning with the opening riff from Glass Prison and the static and the bells, and then they instead ended it with the drum beat from Dying Soul. Other than that, the best of Dream Theater. Five fantastic songs that almost rival the best of TOOL.

Way off in the distance I saw the door I tried to open I tried forcing with all of my will and still The door wouldn't open Unable to trust in my faith I turned and walked away I looked around, felt a chill in the air Took my will and turned it over The glass prison which once held me is now gone A long lost fortress Armed only with liberty And the key of my willingness Fell down on my knees and prayed "Thy will be done" I turned around, saw a light shining through The door was wide open. Glass Shatters.

Really nice job on the transitions! This thing of a series spanning albums was a massive influence on me personally so it's lovely to hear this all in a row. I must admit to stealing quite a few ideas from these guys - recurring themes across albums, albums segueing into each other... It's just such a cool and useful idea for all sorts of reasons.

@@paganthirteen es.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twelve-step_Suite The Mirror Additionally, the song "The Mirror" from the album Awake was written by Mike Portnoy and is considered by many fans as a prologue to the suite, without being part of it. The song is also referenced in the second, fourth and fifth songs of the suite. Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes From a Memory Also in the song "Scene One: Regression" from the album Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes From a Memory says: "Hello Victoria, so glad to see you my friend", similar to: "Hello mirror, so glad to see you my friend "from" This Dying Soul ", plus the character Nicholas sees Victoria in a mirror and has a drinking problem.

@@marinhrabric6162 I do miss a lot. 12 years is a long time indeed. But I can't accept how a band could so easily replace one of its founding members. Kinda like if the Beatles would still be together but found a replacement to Paul McCartney after his departure. And Mike Portnoy did not even depart. He simply wanted a break, DT did not.

Systematic Chaos I think is the weakest album of the Portnoy era... But honestly, when I think of the most moving, strongest parts of the twelve step suite, Repeantace is closely at the top. Such an amazing, and important song for the whole, that sometimes I regret that it is on such a weak album. Can you imagine that this is THE markee song in Train of Thought instead of Vacant? (Not to take away for Vacant, that song is fucking great).

I do think every album (/song) before Systematic Chaos is stronger. But honestly, this is like comparing apples to oranges. Some people will identify more with earlier DT songs, and some others will prefer newer. That is to say, I'm taking the easy way out, and saying my fave song is Space Dye Vest.
