I have been in New West for almost 2 years. I didn't own a car in my first year and had no trouble going to any place. The only con I would say is the hilly terrain. But you get used to it! The other con of "home-less-ness", I woudn't even consider a con. Just compare it to downtown Vancouver or any other neighbouring city, it is worse in those areas.

I can buy a 3 bedroom townhouse in Surry for 300k while a 1 bedroom condo 15 minutes away in Coquitlam is 700k. This is because Surry is full of crime, drugs and gangs. No one wants to live there. Oh and a special mention to the homophobia and homelessness.

Reality check as at January 1, 2025- READ CLOSELY. People are paying $1200 rent for a CLOSET and paying to share a BED...not a room...a BED! And if you think that the Residential Tenancy Branch will help you out when a roommate takes your rent $$$ and changes the locks, replaces you with a roomier paying more and sells or disposes of your belongings, think again. The Residential Tenancy Act of BC, will protect NO tenant - even one who "thinks" they have a valid lease - if they are sharing accommodations, namely a kitchen or bathroom with the owner of said accommodation. Furthermore if sharing with one who is renting, your name MUST appear on the principal tenancy lease between the tenant(s) and landlord or their representative. I volunteered at an organization that "attemts" to help the zillions of tenants being exploited and abused by greedy individuals with absolutely zero morals. Unfortunately by then, you've lost your security deposit, your rent money is gone and chances are there will be no BED available at any of the shelters overwhelmed daily - more so now - and it will only be getting worse. Civil litigation in small claims court is your last and only option - good luck with that. Vancouver is a souless city, devoid of social accountability, humanity, or warmth & kindness. And BE FOREWARNED- if you have a beloved dog, your chances of finding any accommodations are nonexistent. Cats are barely "tolerated" and supplementary pet deposits are required; not to mention that depending on budget, available accommodations are slashed by up to 95%. I hope you don't believe me and look into this for yourself. I have seen individuals completely traumatized by ongoing housing injustice. One long-time tenant and elderly client in a wheelchair, received a " Notice of Eviction for Landlord use"; the landlord claimed her suite was intended for a " relative coming from china ". She could not find suitable lodging on her budget and wound up homeless, on the street. She chose to commit a crime, in order to be arrested and find a roof over her head. It was later found the landlord had LIED and had rented the unit out for $400 more than that poor woman was paying. We helped her file with the Residential Tenancy Branch against the landlord and she LOST. The RTB is another of the most amoral, unjust, inhumane & corrupt part of the BC govt. Be forewarned and good luck.

Rolled my eyes when I heard that lol- unless she owns a daycare business then she definitely has a side hustle... I wish the interviewer prodded more into it. Maybe she's including her parents' allowance in her 'income'. Even for a biased sample size skewed towards current university-goers and staff, that lady's situation is an anomaly which I think hurts the overall results shown in the video.

I noticed price of condos in new west are a bit lower, I wonder why… is it because they are usually older units and poorer neighbourhoods than in Burnaby and Coquitlam?
@WonbaeSon
@WonbaeSon 2 ай бұрын
Sometimes yes but I notice the general public often prefers the bigger, more established neighbourhoods in Burnaby & Coquitlam like Brentwood, Metrotown or Lougheed/Coquitlam centre because there are just way more shops and more going on like with big malls around it. However new west I feel is underrated for how walkable it is and feel like there is more growth to happen with such central location. New west, however, for a long time did have a reputation for its questionable safety and homelessness which still lingers to this day

You are right. I lived there for a long time and it was a wonderful place to live. As you mentioned gang violence was ever present in the entire metro Vancouver area since 90s. And mind you most of these gangsters aren’t even immigrants, but local born and raised middle class immigrant kids who grew up in the 90s. But the news and ignorant people tend to blame recent immigrants for it. I remember chinatowns around the world used to have similar connotations attached to them before and similar gangster like communities emerged from them and were active until 2010s. However, uninformed public will always use their preconceived notions to spread notoriety for a specific group to never stand for self reflection. For example, they never seem to ask why did middle class immigrants raise kids who ended up going the ways they went in the 90s and 00s? It’s a very bizarre to keep blaming outsiders who have nothing to do with it and are often more astonished and shocked by the situation.

Thanks for sharing! Damn, so I did some calculations. To live this lifestyle and not save a cent. One has to earn $70K a year minimum for your lifestyle. The recommended living wage in Vancouver is supposed to be $60K. How things have changed. The average Canadian earns about under $64,000. For sure the expense is mostly on energy, food and housing. 25 ish this year eh? It honestly wasn't that bad when I first started out working. People got by with $45k or $50k.

The reason Vancouver realistate is so expensive is because of foreign money being laundered in the market. The reason cost of everything is so high in Canada. IS because are government is printing money out of thin air then spending like a drunken sailor. The more money int he supply chain the less its worth. Meaning the higher your wages have to go to keep up. This is inflation more money printed = less the moneys worth. That's why in 2010 my brother bought a townhouse in Abbotsford for 182k We bought in 2019 the same town house in Abbotsford for 382k in the same complex. We sold the place in 2021 for 505k. Explain to me how in 11 years the price went from 182k to 505k for a 1975 townhouse ?

Being that an average price of a home (condo, townhouse, houses combined) is $1.25m, and considering 20% down payment, it’s extremely hard to save that much, making it a near impossible goal for an average Vancouverite with a median income.

Grew up in the mainland. Went from 1400 for a whole 2000sqft house in the mid 90s to 2000 for 800sqft basement. Wages just havnt kept up unfortunately. Its definitely become a place that almost requires roommates or a so to live with just to split the cost of housing. This is the biggest factor for why we've seen the largest exodus from bc. Mainly moving to Alberta, USA or overseas, in that order. Making bout 80k/yr and finding it more difficult to save for future and/or vacations. Great video explaining the costs around here for anyone who is looking to move here. Though New West is a little more expensive area over Coquitlam, or Delta. Both neighboring cities. You wont really notice a good savings until you get out to Langley or Ridge

Interesting how you're exactly the type of person to complain about the cost of living here, but you're eating out mutliple times a week. Maybe try cooking 7 days a week and see how much money you save. Sunday you had work cancelled? Then how about you go mow some lawns or do any extra work instead of going to the beach the entire day. People just complain about the cost here but don't take any opportunity to actually make a living.

Hello Thanks for watching and commenting. I appreciate your feedback and yes I’m sure I could be doing a lot more to cut back on my eating out.
