Impressive sailing there. Just did my first Star regatta (North Americans), and loved it. Very challenging class with some extremely talented sailors.

crazy old boat design not for high winds
@ablejack3 Жыл бұрын
The Star was designed just prior to 1910. Astonishing run. It was the yachting keelboat class for Olympic sailing for most of time until very recently. There were a few Olympics starting in the sixties that used the Tempest class boats. The Star handles weather quite well and is still raced regularly around the world. She set the mark for one-design regattas. These racers in the video are really pushing the limits though. Modern foiling boats are much more temperamental and simply won't race when conditions are difficult. That's why hydro-foiling boats don't win long global races. They can't sit out for a day when the weather is unagreeable, so they break.

Rather a disappointing video because of two things: the interview was conducted under extremely, noisy, unfavorable conditions and therefore impossible to hear; and secondly Max Sirena's Italian accent is difficult to follow due to the former's interference. I gave up listening 1 minute in.

Notice that they didn't release the main sheet. They were also at a tricky angle of sail. I race a Corsair F31 so I have been close to that. Not over yet (cross fingers).

There is a certain moment on a multi where the wind gets under the boat and you realize that you are no longer in control of what's going on. Called the "oh shit" moment.

LOL. No need to spend millions of dollars to do crazy things. Today I was in a small town in the Philippines. This was the fiesta day so they had a street race. The cops were chasing guys riding tandem on motorcycles and a bunch of bicyclists were mixing it up with the entire crew. Somebody gets killed every year .. Normal traffic as well. Then a funeral procession came through with marchers behind the hearse and a brass band. I swear this is true. It is more fun in the Philippines.

I have seen ETNZ foiling upwind! But I would imagine the combined speed upward and downwind is greatly affected by the foil incidence. But you can never be too sure with these guys...
