So far as I'm aware the only canal was the one to Port Carlisle which is long gone. The Petterill wasn't/isn't navigable

Love this and a great ‘how to’………. Think how much more the Environment Agency could do if Liz Truss when she headed it up had not cut £250 million from their budget…….. And people wonder why many rivers are polluted with farm waste and raw sewage is pumped into the seas……. Water Companies are about profit not meeting their environmental responsibilities to their customers and the earth thats why they need auditing. One day all will be clean and rich in biodiversity again as people are at last waking up!

In South Yorkshire the EA seem determined to do the opposite by ensuring that the Weir on the lower River Loxley near Malin Bridge has been raised and fish passage obstructed.The abstraction licence is ignored so the Weir largely runs dry in favour of a turbine bypass.

The EA have consented to scheme on the lower River Loxley which has resulted in the near blocking of the river and Weir and the diversion of the creatures through a turbine.They state that the constant abuse of the abstraction licence is a minor matter and refuse to enforce the requirements.Check it out.

I lived near this weir on the Petterill but never knew what it was for and assumed it had something to do with the Upperby Steam Sheds behind it or possibly Harraby Mill. There was also a beam across the river just downstream of the weir.
