Used to pack steam valves on war ships in the navy, we had some useless tool called a packing extractor, but after the gland seat had been in a few months and been tightened up a few times the packing was ROCK hard so the old scribber was the tool of choice to get packing out 🏴👍we also used to put a 45 degree angle on the cut packing rather than a butt joint

Great video. If there are two sizes of packing and you don’t know the size until you get one piece out you can’t pre cut your packing unless you pre cut both sizes.
@rivercanalrescue6450Ай бұрын
Thankyou. Yes that's all you can really do, have both sizes ready and cut then you'll be prepared, it's a pain, but it's a fail safe way. Thanks of the feedback 👍

So, who is liable. The boat owner has done everything correctly. They paid a professional to survey the boat. The insurance company accepted the risk by receiving money from the owners. Someone needs to pay. I am so sorry for the owners.

I’m curious about several issues. I assume fresh water (River), so that would eliminate some salt issues. I’m sure the interior will be a total redo. Hopefully, the engine can be repaired rather than replaced. A channel on the refit would be a great idea! Good luck to the owner!
@rivercanalrescue64505 ай бұрын
Hi Ken, yes the inside of the boat is a total right off, we think that the engine will be useable with a lot of tlc though, our engineers perform a "first aid" service for submerged engines and they are effective in bringing some of the engines back to life and sometimes this will be covered by the owners insurance. A channel specifically for refits is a good idea, but for us to do that would be almost a full time position, so isn't possible for us to do...sadly... However, the chap does send us updated photo's of the refit, so once he has finished his build, we will publish a video, because there has been a lot of interest in this recovery. Thanks for your comment, we do pass on good luck messages and messages of support to him. I believe that he also sees this on youtube.

Did the boat his that tree that's growing across the canal why don't crt cut those trees back I see so many like that growing over almost half the canal making navigation very difficult and dangerous for those driving on boats
@rivercanalrescue64505 ай бұрын
We're not sure if the tree was overhanging the river, we only know that the current took the boat towards the bank while he was turning and it became entangled in the trees on the bank. There are a lot of overhanging trees on the system though, so you're right to be careful

Feels like a silly question, but how do you stop it from immediately sinking again overnight etc? Run pumps continuously?
@gordonchapman2226 ай бұрын
I would imagine the CRT will tow it away and take it out of the water somewhere. It won't be left like that
@rivercanalrescue64506 ай бұрын
It's not a silly question at all. We make sure that there is no water ingress before we leave the vessel and we always leave an automatic bilge pump and new battery in place just in case. The team also investigate where the water came into the boat and block any holes they may find. The boats are either moved by the customer, or their insurance arranges for the boat to be towed/lifted to either a salvage broker, or a chosen marina.

Not an exact figure, but having rebuilt a boat myself, although it is 20 feet bigger.. It will run into the many thousands, he is doing everything himself though which cuts the price down. I would estimate somewhere between 10k - 15k I will ask the owner once he's completed it. He's very upbeat about it, lovely chap
