I recently became a King fan only about 2 years ago and I LOVE his books. I listened to Pet Semetary on audio book (narrated by the guy who played Dexter on TV and he was AMAZING)...but anyways it was the first book to genuinely creep me out. I loved it lol. Ive only read about 10 of his books so far and I cant wait to get to more. I agree though people base their opinions on the movies, but his books go so much deeper. He has so much insight into life in general too I think. Some really deep observations. I cant recommend his books enough. 👍

I am sooo close to reading every book he's written, and I can honestly say that there isn't a bad one in the bunch. Thank you for the comment! Any recommendations for a future episode of Wednesday Night Book Club?

Great to see this review. New subscriber. This is my all time favourite book along with Lord of the Flies. Robert Cormier, although critically acclaimed, never had the level of commercial success that he deserved in my opinion. It’s hard to even find reviews of his work. Interesting POV about the Avenger. I find these characters so fascinating in their complexity. Reading this changed my life in a lot of ways, making me think about issues I’d never considered before. Life is messy and often there are no easy answers. Minor correction - Buddy doesn’t reprimand when the attempted r*pe happens, despite seeing Karen’s pleading eyes he slips back into the shadows. Buddy is such a thought provoking character. It’s interesting that you didn’t discuss Buddy’s backstory - he got involved with the trashers when he was struggling with his parents’ divorce. The book’s commentary on the impact of family breakdown on children is so hard hitting it’s scary. I agree the book definitely could have gone in a few different directions. I actually love the focus on Buddy and Jane’s impossible love story. Their relationship is such a fascinating concept because we know it’s impossible but at the same time it’s so painful as Buddy truly does love her and his return to hopelessness when they break up while Jane moves on then feels pity for him, realising how far pity is from hate, and very far from love. It’s so unbelievably tragic. Thank you for bringing some youtube attention to this incredible book.

Thank you so much for your comment, as a new channel we definitely appreciate it, plus the sub! The way that Cormier writes a young person's inner thoughts is so spot on to what is was like being that age, I never trashed a house but we've all made those terrible mistakes you wish you could stop from ever happening in the first place. I'm sure I mentioned it in the review but I read this book because of how much I adore "The Chocolate War" books that he wrote (there is a Wednesday Night Book Club review/discussion on those on the channel if you are interested), so I am a big fan of Cormier, have you read any of his other works? I might have to re-read "We All Fall Down" with a different perspective this time, maybe I can see the love story for more than what it is at face value. So, you are the first real engagement we've had on this channel, would you like to suggest my next book review/discussion? I am always looking for something new to read!

@FriedRicePodcast no problem. It was great to discover your review. I've also read from Cormier: The Chocolate War, Fade, Tenderness, I am the cheese and Tunes for bears to dance to, but these were all a long time ago. They're good and reflect Cormier's signature style but WAFD is the only one I'm passionate about enough to revisit often. I watched your Chocolate War video, too. I probably need to revisit that book. Thanks for the offer to suggest something. I highly recommend reading Fish: Memoir of a boy in a man's prison by TJ Parsell. It's absolutely incredible. It's a true story. I couldn't put it down. It really makes you think about crime, punishment, justice, prisoners' rights, r*pe, sexuality, peer pressure, freedom, the list goes on. It's another book I can't believe isn't better known because it's so incredible. Like Cormier, there's very little commentary on it.

I just ordered it, looking forward to reviewing my first memoir on the show! If you do decide to revisit The Chocolate War, give the sequel a shot, it's a fun read despite how stressful it is for that kid. Also, if you enjoy memoirs you might enjoy "Forager: Field Notes for Surviving a Family Cult: a Memoir" by Michelle Dowd, she details her childhood growing up in a doomsday cult, it's excellent, one of my top reads this year so far. Look for a review on "Fish" in the near future, and thank you again for the support!

@FriedRicePodcast that's great, looking forward to the review. The author also has a KZbin channel but I don't know if he still uses it as it was set up some time ago. He's a public figure for prison reform and prisoner rights. I'll have to reread the chocolate war followed by the sequel. Often sequels are difficult to pull off as people hate the additional conflict created for characters which doesn’t always match the original but is naturally required to keep the story going. Your perspective makes it sound like Cormier did a decent job with the sequel, no easy feat. I'll have to check out that memoir too. I've never heard of it, but it sounds interesting. A close second recommendation for a Memoir would be Chinese Cinderella by Adeline Yen Mah. Another incredible story of someone who grew up during a momentous time of Chinese history and overcame so much injustice to survive and eventually thrive.
