For one thing this is not, nor has it EVER been the Confederate flag. It is the battle flag of the northern Virginia. I don't care what this flag means to anyone, to me it represents "HERITAGE". My for fathers fought and most died in the civil war. I display and wear this battle flag to honor my relatives that served and died in this war. To those that say it offends them because it represents slavery, are you offended by the flag of England? The English were the first to bring slaves into what is now America. In fact, the first slave owner in 1619 was a black man by the name of Anthony Johnson. It's just a flag. As my first amendment rights gives me freedom of expression, i will continue to honor my fallen relatives regardless of who it offends.. Also, why do we celebrate the 4th of July, Independence, which is what the south wanted. Lincoln was elected president, but did not receive a single electoral vote from southern states, so they felt they were not a part of this so called UNITED States of America and so southern states began to secede.

I didnt love the moderation of this debate. I'm not a confederate sympathizer by any means but its clear the teacher pressed the students who defended the flag more than the other side. I just like to see balanced moderation.

Yeah you hear a lot of white privilege in there. It’s not a fault of them, it’s just a fact. The whole thing is, if it doesn’t directly affect them or if they can’t know what’s it’s like to be in a person of colors shoes. Makes it hard for them to actually get the point on an emotional/real level. It’s more like a in one ear out the other for most sounds bad but if it’s not affecting me I’ll react with the bare minimum to make myself feel good or excused for really not giving a shit cause I’m good. Great argument. I may disagree at some points, but it is a well performed argument with solid evidence. The only problem I would point out is that a lot of people (not everybody, but a lot) today who fly that flag, including me, do it because of personal reasons. Now I am a born and raised Northerner in suburbia, with Union ancestors. I view the flag as a symbol of southern culture and rebellion against tyranny. That is just how I see the flag. Symbols change over time, sometimes for the better and some for the worse.
