Two things missing are what wind speed is safe to fly, and what to do if you want to bring it down but your spike is way out of reach, been flying a hydra 300 3 line foil for years, stepped up to a rev which i have flown a dozen times, just bought a skydog 5 meter four line power kite, flew it for the first time in about 9 mph wind, and let me tell you, i am completely humbled, and i have got a bunch of untangling to do!
@quedecreeАй бұрын
The speed thing is tricky - depends on the size of the kite and the skill of the operator and also how dense the air mass is. I like buggying in 12 - 15 knots best but static flying below 12 knots with a 2 - 3m kite. A 5m kite is hard work to fly static - as you've found out! - in anything other than a gentle breeze. Bigger kites are great for the buggy but tiring and relatively slow if you're just flying them static (ie: no wheels / board under you). A friend of mine loves 25 knots plus so he can go for 100kph in a kite buggy - I'm usually packing up when he's getting ready to go. It's all relative. If you need to put it down, pull both brakes hard or release the safety if you have one and find something to wrap the brake lines around - fence post, rucksack - anything. One time on the buggy I went too far into a wet claypan - couldn't steer and had nowhere to put the kite down so I had to keep it above me until I could trudge over to fence a few hundred yards away to land the kite and go back and pull the buggy out of the ooze.

What’s the benefit of attaching the handles together? I have a 4m kite and sometimes spreading my arms apart and lifting the side I want to turn helps get out of a tricky position a the edge of the window.
@quedecree2 ай бұрын
The handles aren't physically connected - It's just economy of movement - there's nothing I need to do that I can't do with the handles together. Spreading the arms and waving them around a bit will give you a better workout, though it can look a little....er.....odd :)
@steveco18002 ай бұрын
@@quedecree Looked like you had a rope connecting the tops. Thinking about it, I should probably just do the round and under to recover from the edge of the window like you showed. I have been avoiding twisting the lines, and with a 3m Blade I started on it was not so tricky but this 4m Twister can begin to luff and then spiral. The technique I mentioned definitely helps but yeah, better flight planning and I wouldn’t need it. Thanks
@quedecree2 ай бұрын
@@steveco1800Steve - you're right about the rope connecting the tops - I forgot all about this. This is the strop which allows you to connect it to a pulley or carabiner on your harness to take all the weight. I have very rarely flown/buggied this way as I usually use a bar when I'm in the buggy rather than handles and don't often fly with a harness when standing as I'm doing here (known as static flying as opposed to buggying / kite surfing / landboarding etc). For what I'm doing in the vid, the strop is not doing anything at all and would be a little too restrictive for stunt kite flying.

Mounting direct to the picavet plate is unreliable and rarely works well. Using a rod to drop the camera lower mounted for more leverage is more effective. I just use the one KAPtery makes that already does this by default and it's great.

I think it was 40mm alloy tube with a 3mm wall thickness. The rubber grommets are to protect the cords from abrasion where they link the tubes together. Cheers - John.

I bought one of these 7 years ago, swapped out pickups for Nashville Hots for the neck, and a Fulltone Humbucker bridge, removed the middle pickup, installed a 4 way switch with reverse pols for positions 2/3 and this thing screams. I've had to do alot of work and made it my own, but this machine is pretty good. I really found good value in the neck and body. Its an excellent guitar to make your own at least for the initial starting price.

Some years later I flew it from the buggy and thought - geez, this thing wouldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding!!! After a few sessions in various conditions, you'll start feeling more comfortable. Having said that, keep an eye on conditions - gusty wind and small power kites can do us serious damage. Keep to gentle/mild conditions while you learn what it can do.

Hey @quedecree, nice build! I've got the same problem, I'd love a tensa 4 but with exchange rates and shipping I can't justify spending close to $1k AUD. How has it held up since you posted this video? Did the rivets hold ok?
@quedecree8 ай бұрын
Can't see any problem with the rivets developing and nothing seems unduly stressed when using - probably the cords holding the pole ends together will need to be kept an eye on as they may chafe where they go through the poles. Other than that, she's a beauty. A tad more bulky and heavier than the Tensa but I can live with that :) Cheers - J.

I can’t find any retailer nearby who carries this guitar, but I’m completely allured by it. Obviously I’m hesitant to order without playing it. Any advice, or more elaboration on how it plays/feels?
@quedecree9 ай бұрын
The combination of the Ultra thin C neck, thru neck design, satin finish and fishman pickups make this a hell of a good guitar. However, there are a few other Schecter models with the same neck / pickup configuration and finish as the Avenger SLS elite - if you can get your hands on any of them, that will give you a good feel for what this particular model is like. The thing I like most about it is the way the notes do not get 'thin sounding' as I start getting above the 12th fret on the high E - I am not sure if this is down to the Fishmans, the thru-neck or the weight of the guitar (it's relatively heavy) probably a combo of all three. It is certainly in another league compared to the Omen Extreme behind me on the wall. If you can't find this model, give a few a try with same neck/frets & finish. While the shape of the Avenger is a little 'odd' it does sit comfortably when playing. Best of luck!

Hey, thank you for the thorough reply! Super helpful. The guitar tone sounds clear and beautiful, and based on your style and the only other video I can find it seems suitable for me. One thing I forgot to ask about is the pros and cons of a Floyd Rose bridge and tuning locks…I’ve never played, let alone set up a guitar with those features. Is this something that’s easy to get used to? Thanks
@quedecree9 ай бұрын
@@lars526 A floyd rose can drive you crazy if you handle it wrong. There are some good videos on changing strings where they use a block to lock the FR level and in place - change strings, tune up, then unblock the FR and adjust back to tune with the tension springs on the back of the guitar, then re-tune with the tuners, then lock the nut and use the bridge fine tuners after that. Hmmm...that sounds way more complex than what it is. Once you get used to them, they seem to stay in tune pretty much as good as a fixed bridge. BUT - you can't easily tune to a drop D in a hurry and if you break a string, the tuning will be so far out of whack that it's unplayable. Probably worth spending a few hours on youtube vids of pros/cons & setting up a Floyd Rose before pulling the trigger on one and if you use different tunings often, then I'd definitely stay with a fixed bridge.
@lars5269 ай бұрын
@@quedecree Thanks again. What I may do is talk to some guitar experts from my local shops to get their opinion and also see if they'd be willing to guide me through the process of setting up a FR. If it seems like something I can learn easily and is actually less of a nuisance than I currently envision, I'm going to take a chance with this guitar. Love your playing, great & neutral description of the instrument.

G'day John, I've just watched you other videos on this kayak. Can you comment on how you go about drying the kayak? I've read they can be difficult or almost impossible to dry out completely due to moisture getting between the inner bladders and outer skin. People have commented it can get slimey. This is the only thing stopping us from pulling the trigger to buy two of these. Any advice appreciated. Cheers Mark
@johnholgate108810 ай бұрын
Hi Mark. I usually partially inflate the kayak inside at home when the fire is going or somewhere dry and warm. Any moisture I wipe up with a towel first. When partially inflated you can get a towel in between the bladders. Haven’t noticed any slime yet. But yes, you do need to let them air dry within a few days of use. Cheers - John.
