Sometimes just knowing how to speak the language is a big help. You probably know quite a bit already, but until you can say it the way musicians say it, it's hard to talk about it.

I'm struggling to understand how rap technically is music since much of it lacks melody. Rap is closer to the sound my clock makes than a song.
@two2twain3 жыл бұрын
Respectfully, have you listened to much rap (hip-hop)? There is melody all over it. At 0:43 in this video, I say that when we "add pitch, [we] create the tune [i.e., the melody]." This is a basic definition for a basic video. Melody is the organization of pitches over time. Melody does not necessarily mean "a tune" like "Happy Birthday," and may or may not use pitches drawn from the Western chromatic scale. Hip-hop incorporates melody through bass lines, samples to create background textures, drum patterns (instruments of indefinite pitch that are very carefully tuned), and the pitch that is inherent in spoken language that is often exaggerated in rapping. This video is meant to have an expansive, inclusive approach to answer the question "What things does all music have?" If hip-hop doesn't have the *kind* of melody you like, that is a function of taste, not presence or absence.

I searched "melodic hip-hop" in YT, and here is the first song on the first playlist that showed up: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jJqViZSfgM2an7c. It doesn't "do" melody in the same way that, say, Tchaikovsky, does, but I wouldn't expect it to, since it comes from over a century later, on a different continent, and uses a completely different set of technologies. But melody drives it in important ways. There are places where there are three different melodic ideas happening at the same time, and one of the things that helps keep the listener's interest is how the number of melodic layers keeps changing throughout the song. I'm not a huge hip-hop fan, but my son loves it, and judging from what I hear from his listening and my own, this song is no exception.
@@two2twain I don't tune it in. It does nothing for me. Not all of it is bad. There's nothing wrong with it. To me it is rhyme and little more.

Thank you for this Played different instruments for a lifetime in a sporadic pattern Last year I got a bass guitar and amp because I tend to enjoy playing heavy deep notes Then for Christmas I got myself a keylab 49 and discovered that I now have more than a keyboard and synthesizer Congratulations your now a music producer.... only once you figure it out .... I've been asking other musicians about what they considered to be the effect of a song that will make people stop whatever they are doing well listen ...... I'm gonna go flip on my system and apply what I got from this video
