Wow! Ty for posting this. I have always thought that Lou Gramm’s Midnight Blue was a stellar song. REM was an absolute favorite when I was in high school and college. So absolutely cool they covered this song. I never knew! I came here to listen after listening to Gramm on Eddie Trunk’s podcast!

I first heard this song around 25 years ago when my husband and I scored a copy of The Beat of the Traps. It happened to be the song up on my car iPod yesterday and I drove around Richmond CA and the I-580 with this song blaring yesterday. RIP Mr. President.

Got the album in early '94. Had it on a tape and was playing it in the car for my dad and brother while they were visiting me in Austin. It was the 22nd of April and "Richard Nixon" came on. I hadn't heard the news yet but my father had. Just a day shy of my birthday. Would have added to the list of celebrities that have died on my birthday. Johnny Thunders, Howard Cosell, Otto Preminger, Red Garland.

(Verse 1) Have you heard of the ship Called the good Reuben James? Run by hard fighting men Both of honor and of fame She flew the Stars and Stripes Of the land of the free, But tonight she's in her grave At the bottom of the sea (Chorus) Oh, tell me, what were their names, Tell me, what were their names? Did you have a friend on the good Reuben James? Oh, tell me, what were their names, Tell me, what were their names? Did you have a friend on the good Reuben James? (Verse 2) One hundred men went down To their dark and watery graves When that good ship went down, Only forty-four were saved 'Twas the last day of October They saved forty-four From the dark, icy water Of that cold Iceland shore (Chorus) (Verse 3) It was there in the dark Of that cold and watery night They watched for the u-boats And they waited for a fight Then a whine and a rock And a great explosion's roar They lay the Reuben James On that cold ocean floor (Chorus) (Verse 4) Many years have passed Since those brave men are gone Those cold, icy waters, They're still and they're calm Many years have passed And still I wonder why The worst of men must fight And the best of men must die! (Chorus) The end.

I grew up listening to this Kingston Trio version with my dad, and as a history fan from childhood, I did always wonder about the story. Thank you for answering that question, and ensuring that those men’s names and stories will never be forgotten.

I saw them do this at William and Mary hall in Va. I thought it was such an odd choice too. And took me completely by surprise because this was before all this mass communication and there were still surprises . But Michael is right. It's a great song I bet Peter loved playin' the guitar riff

I drove three fraternity brothers in a 71 chevy impala from Hampden Sydney college to the college of William and Mary to see this show fall of 87. We ate some shrooms before the show and the 10,000 manics opene with a killer set. we all fell in love with Natalie somewhere in the middle of the show a fight broke out and we headed to the upper levels to chill out and listen to the music. they started playing "midnight blue" and we thought it was a joke...we were confused and laughed i still have recurring dreams from that whole experience
