It's one thing to self-promote so there's always a steady stream of attractive young university students in the office, but the reality of volunteering at FRU isn't always what the paid staff would have you believe. The charity only introduced a 'Bullying and Harassment' policy in 2013 and paid money for mediation at Linklaters in 2014 and 2015 when female volunteers were sexually harassed by male barristers in the office. That is a fact. No one at the charity will tell you exactly how many sexual harassment allegations they handle each year or what the outcomes of those allegations were. When considering that Oxfam and Save the Children willingly submitted themselves to independent review when allegations of abuse arose, I'm not sure why FRU won't do the same. Wouldn't an independent investigation exonerate them if all those claims of sexual harassment and bullying were all made up? It's not good enough. It's not an option either for those volunteers to go to court as only employees can go to tribunal - there's in fact a two-tier system in the office where employees have more options after the same abuse than volunteers do. I care very much about what volunteers go through in trying to build their legal CVs. I'd like to know exactly how many students have come forward to report abuse. I'd like to know exactly what a mediation session costs a charity and I'd like to know how many times FRU has paid for them. Until I have those answers, I remain proud not to give FRU a single penny.
