The more I listen to this song, the more it becomes my favorite rock song. Every note, every transition, every drum beat and flourish is perfect. And this particular performance is studio-recording tight. That's really hard to accomplish in a live performance. I saw them in concert on their Wincing the Night Away tour; they were in the pocket tight. Great band.

It was on MTV and rock radios too, but 1999 wasn't the same as 1996, if you know what i mean. Also "Amen" wasn't "This Fire", i bought both CDs. But you are right, this song is very good.

if you think Conan was obnoxious here, don't blame him, blame American audiences. Carefully watching, you'll see that he's trying to "translate" Hornby to make him come across. A lot of that is amplification and exaggeration. Conan is a _very_ smart and sensitive person, and he wasn't even merely self-interested by acting this way (i.e. for ratings). Imagine you were Hornby: to be handled this way by Conan might be a little awkward and dispiriting, but to have all your humour and intelligence meet with a deafening silence of bored non-appreciation would be worse.

Conan famously loves Jack White, my son discovered White Stripes, when Conan had them as his musical guests for a full week, in around 2001-2, I love Jack White too and I am obsessed with Steady As She Goes, such a great song. Now Jack has lived in Nashville for at least 10 years. Neil Young recorded a full album at JW’s house, Jack found an old record making booth, like I used as a child at POP(Pacific Ocean Park), Jack had the booth refurbished and that’s what & where Neil recorded an album at Jack’s house.❤reb
