Hi,, I have a question. I am interested in applying for jobs through the Department of State. My goal is to move to Senegal. My husband has dual citizenship, I'm American only. When applying for jobs it appears the ones posted now are for EFM. Can my husband or myself apply for jobs or will we automatically be rejected because we do not have family members currently working for the US Embassy/government? I also take the OMST in a few weeks, wish me luck!
@RobJoswiak7 күн бұрын
We must have world wide availability. It is very difficult the Department of State with the mindset of only wanting to serve in one specific nation. I would suggest you approach it with a more open mindset. Good luck!

I wanted to apply to become a Foreign Service Specialist twice. First, in summer or early fall of 2023. Then, January this year. In both instances, I backed out before submitting my application. Last week, I received an email from the Dept of State. There are open positions for RMLS again. I want to go through the application this time, but I am fearful because of my accent. This video made me feel motivated. Miss Min's experience moved me. Thank you for sharing.

Hi I have been wondering about the vehicle issue. I’m in the application process and currently financing my vehicle. I don’t know if I can take it out of the country without paying it off first. What about places that have the steering wheel on the other side.? TY
@RobJoswiak5 ай бұрын
You have to talk to your bank about the specifics of your loan but definitely something to keep in mind. The laws vary country to country. Once you get assigned, you can cross check whether your vehicle meets the standards of that nation or not.

Talk to your lender about the loan and shipping it overseas. The vehicle will have to meet whatever standards and laws of the country you are assigned to.

I do not know but you can ask here: JMAS institutional academic and staff facilities are located at the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) Headquarters on Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling (JBAB). JMAS instructional facilities available for educational use include classrooms, seminar rooms, computer suites, a classroom amphitheater and the headquarters main auditorium. Additionally, students have access and use of the Hughes library located in the headquarters building and the DIA Learning Resource Center located at Building 351 on JBAB. The campus street address is 200 MacDill Boulevard, Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling (JBAB), Washington, DC 20340-5100. Official inquiries may be directed to DIA’s Office of Corporate Communications: Phone/202-231-5554; Fax/202-231-0851.

I have so many questions about what life will be like as FSO. Like, what happens to my wife and baby? Can FSOs use cannabis? Can my wife continue her work as a cannabis researcher? Do they travel with me to my first post? If they assign me to a post I don't want, can i decline or am I obligated (like military service)? When serving overseas, can you leave the embassy/consulate and visit the locals? Once i know tha Foreign services is what i wanna do, I'll take that test.

Do you know what FS folks sent to places like SA, UK, AUS (who drive on the opposite side as the US) typically do with their cars? Any idea if you're authorized to drive a left hand drive vehicle in a left hand drive side of the road country?
@RobJoswiak9 ай бұрын
Great question. Most people just get a car there. Almost every left hand drive country doesn't permit right hand drives. So it's typically a simple solution.

Question: With 8 years of Active Duty service, and 3 years of Federal Civil Service at another agency (11 years combined), can 11 years of service be elgible to count toward the 20 year requirement to retire with the Foreign Service in accordance with the 50/20 rule? Meaning, I can retire after 9 years of Foreign Service?
