2:35 of the many excavations ive worked on over the past 30 years, the Turnershall farm dig was my favourite. Not because of the burial goods you see on display, but the story we uncovered. After removing, finishing the two cremation burials we removed several square metres of plough/topsoil and discovered the remains of a rectangular basic Roman villa/ farmhouse. We also discovered the remains of the iron age roundhouse that predated the villa, Theres no real proof , but the pottery and other archaeology indicates the landowners replacing their old home ,the roundhouse with the new style Roman villa . We found evidence that the villa had been carefully dismantled, very possibly by the new generation, who buried their grandparents in what was the garden in front of the villa , the roof , floor tiles , removed and re used to build a new larger villa just a few hundred metres from the old home . Also discovered a few metres away and filled in around the same time as the old villa was being dismantled, was a simple building separated into two rooms, one sauna/ steam room and the other cold plunge pool . Its very rare we get to see a slice of the past covering 2 or 3 generations of the same family. :)
