Hey man I am working on a savage right now and will be doing head gasket and timing chain replacement. I heard about the timing chain tensioner mod but I don’t have the things to do it. If you ever have to break down the inside of this engine and do the bearings on it I would like to see a video on that too. This video was short and simple to follow and I appreciate you getting one of these types of videos out here lol. It was difficult to find out how to get the timing done on mine. I saw markings just didn’t know what they meant or where they were supposed to be.

But im at least 90 percent sure its a headgasket but it could be both idk.
@paulpierson55632 жыл бұрын
This was very useful for me cause the issues you described are exactly what im having and a little more. I also have a leak from a bolt hole i assume was a kick start before it became an electric start. And now idk what to put in there....
@isaaclee47122 жыл бұрын
What happens if you turn that bolt clockwise ? Does it destroy anything or mess up the whole timing .. etc?
@ChrisLefebre8 ай бұрын
I would like to know this too lmk if you ever found out please 😁
@patmos75212 жыл бұрын
It’s best to remove side cover on primary gear/clutch side when removing the head. The timing chain tensioner is spring loaded. So when the chain is removed from cam and loosened, the tensioner fully extends itself to take up that extra slack. Once extended it cant be pushed back in without resetting the slide lock and it can actually allow the inner cylinder on the tensioner to slide out of the sleeve that houses it and the spring. You can set the timing and then do I final chain tensioning before closing up the case.

Hey quick question I just replace my head and I try to rotate my alternator rotor bolt so it can be at TDC but it seem difficult to turn (clockwise). But on another note when I take the head cover off and turn it, it’s easier to turn? Any solution thanks you!

YabanRider where’s the video for that? I can’t figure out how to get this beast out
@yabanrider6005 жыл бұрын
@@mateuszmazur6222 sorry ive been gone from youtube for quite a while. Give you the quick notes to figure out. Get a jack. Some Stands. Tank off. Carb off. Unplug it all and all other obvious stuff and find a "Big ass" friend. Unbolt all engine mounts of course. When you have all the room for doing so (i did it as the last thing to come off the frame so hopefully you dont need to go as far) jack the bottom of the engine up and have a friend tip it forwards, push it towards them and lift it out from one side and have them pull and guide from the other. They are going to have to catch it and its a heavy bitch expecially at that angle so be careful. The other way is putting the frame to the side down on some spare carpeting and cardboard. Drain the oil first and do it slowly
@mateuszmazur62225 жыл бұрын
YabanRider thanks you I got it out after beating my head and cleaning it more. I had not seen two screws holding a plate in the way. I carried the engine to my work bench, where I’m taking my sweet time taking I apart. I have an ‘87 Suzuki Savage that’s been sitting for idk 10 years

I was looking into getting a 98 savage 650. Looks nice.... But are they a decent bike. Always had a twin but I really want a one lunger. Looking for loud exhaust idea too.
@yabanrider6006 жыл бұрын
they sound basically like a quiet Harley lol. that's the best way I can describe it. it's still pretty loud. it rides really nice (before new shocks, bearings and tires). I personally like it. it's not good for higher speeds since it tops off at 90ish but cruising back roads is great on a savage. if you do get one check out my engine review. what for the oil leak spots that can be cause by the head bolt plug. and other then that if you do get one I would recommend the mod for the tensioner. it is kinda a crappy part design .so it's something I'm planning to alter on. mine
