The seats on the "Red Rattlers" were way more comfortable and there was way more leg room.

Introduction requires more than testing for the D's. Essentially it is broken down into two sections: Testing and Infrastructure Modifications. The first is an ongoing process that each set will be put through until they have achieved X amount of km's without a serious/moderate fault. The second involved a 12-18 month long program to modify trackside infrastructure to facilitate the new operating model. At this moment only a portion of the CCN reaches the compliance for 10/6 car operation. 8/4 car operation is possible but it is not the preferred config for TfNSW. A number of sets are already close to or have finished major testing. The current hold up is due to TfNSW/SydneyTrains not starting the trackside works until July of 2024 and the works are slated to continue until early 2026. With CCN being the first line followed by BMT and SCO. But SCO could come before BMT.

what modifications extra at trackside are needed to facilitate the new operating model? they have been working for some years now i would have thought they would be finished?

@@Roadrunnerz45 Sigh I have made 3 attempts to answer your question but youtube is being youtube. The trackside modifications involve the installation of the new car markers and ballises for the selective door operation. Alongside most small stations you will find signposts that will say 8V 8H 4V 4H. For the NIF operating model new signs are required for 10/6/4 and in some cases relocation of the ballises that were installed. So during mid 2024 these modifications began on the CCN, to understand whats involved in the process google RailSafe WN-30-2024 for some diagram of a few CCN stations. The remainder of the CNN and the rest of the Intercity network will occur between now and early/mid 2026. Additionally you can view the project details on Transport NSW and search for the following Rail Infrastructure Upgrades project and view the Mariyung Fleet checklist document located in the Environmental Impact Assessment checklists box.
