I dont think theres an easy answer to the suicide issue. I think its probably many different factors. I was surprised to hear that the majority are young men. Probably because most in my area have been older men. Young people dont seem to have the resilience to cope with life issues that previous generations did. I wonder what thats about?

Far too much emphasis on materialism and big success at an early age and scoring points in the leaving cert. I know so many people who dropped out of school at an early age who set up their own businesses. I know young people who are working in shops who feel like failures because they didn't get the points to go to ucd or trinity. When I ask them whats wrong with working in a shop either they can't answer me or they compare themselves to other people. However I've met others who say I've got a roof over my head and I live in a great community. I can study part time. Its no big deal.

Perhaps young people could benefit from group talks in school with experts in attendance from time to time. There is so much to deal with growing up today. Some children are very artistic so they need space to express themselves. Sad about the older, yet still younger men. Again, talk therapy. Life all over the world is not easy for anyone - people have same issues. It is all about how we react and deal with problems. Covid, am sure, magnifies. Blessings to all.

As a person that was young in Ireland once....between those ages I was made to feel less than, the school system put an enormous amount of pressure on me, there was bullying that went unchecked, from teachers and students alike. Adults need to watch their mouths and stop shitting on the youth before they're even out of the gate. Hearing words like "oh that one!" from the old lady down the road or slut shaming a 16/17 year old girls for just living. The college system needs to change. Feeling like you have to pick the career the rest of your life depends on at 17 or 18 is ridiculous. Good jobs or even getting into jobs that were more interesting, like going from a town background to agriculture or in my case civil engineering from a convent that didn't teach draughting, seemed impossible. The sexism..Jesus. I miss home very much but it was easier to move abroad. At least here I can fail in private. On a side note. In the past 25 years I've known 4 irish men that have commit suicide. Each one had a few things in common. They were handsome, funny, popular and on the outside seemed happy.....and were either married to or dating some miserable women. One of the 4 was 18 and his girlfriend cheated on him., but she was young too and shouldn't be to blame. Is it a trapped into traditional life that did it for the others? Who knows. I've heard a few guys say they don't believe in God anymore. I think the catholic church helped out with that. Nothing like having your core beliefs tainted. "Ireland is the old sow that eats her own"

16 year olds shouldnt be out "living" having fun with men, its how teenage pregnacy happens
@lorrygeewhizzbang952110 ай бұрын
@@dannyyy97 Just living doesn't mean out with men. Point in case right there. Who said anything about out living with men? And If you're referring to girls now a days why are you shitting on the girl and not the guy? They're not dating themselves! Too many people who listen to rumors and spiteful morons trying to drag down girls they don't even know because she was too pretty for their liking. Disgusting excuses for humans is all they are. It's the likes of them and I'm guessing you that kept the magdeline sisters well paid.

Well shouldn't the self preservation instinct be enough to keep you alive?

Probably not. I'd imagine if you're suicidal you don't have a self to preserve. Its gone.

The education system plays a massive role, at 15, the junior cycle finishes for most and the horror of working towards the leaving certificate begins. The lack of critical thinking, political and philosophical education alongside an education system mostly still in the grasp of a Catholic church that refuses to teach a modern version of sex education that includes the LGBTQ+ community. The leaving certificate has left many people scarred for life along with a points system and university placement system that asks children to decide what they want to do with the rest of there lives at a point where they have not been exposed to enough of the world and blindly have to decide or have their parents decide. This is even more daunting for those dealing with the ravages of poverty or those whose parents have not been to college or university. Throw in a lot of drugs, alcohol, losing or not losing one virginity, dealing with first loves and break ups, suicide or death of friends, family and you should expect nothing but mental health issues. Reganism/Thatcherism/Neoliberalism of the last 40 years has bent the education system towards producing consumers and not citizens who would through philosophy and critical thinking ask what kind of society they themselves would like to have. Each milestone in the Irish education system forks and divides children into their respective classes. Friendships, relationships are torn apart, I think about the character who is left behind in a small town in "Normal People" after not doing well in his leaving certificate, left behind, he commits suicide, a scene so familiar to so many young Irish people alongside forced emigration or no housing, stuck living with your parents, unable to grow or change because you are locked into a society where a small elite hold vast power and influence. We have to seperate church and state, reform the education system completely so these 15 to 24 year olds can ask themselves do we want to continue in a capitalist system that is pushing us towards the 6th mass extinction, never ending bullshit jobs, extortionate rents, homelessness, global pandemics, never ending wars or do want to work together towards building a better society having learned from the mistakes of the past. To finish with the 1st Republic, FF, FG, and the civil war and declare a 2nd Republic with a new constitution, reforming all institutions of government including the landscape, all species and the ecosystem as citizens with constitutional rights and protections. To have a referendum and citizens assembly in regards building a second Republic.

Surprised this guy couldn't give some general idea's or social forces that might be at play with suicide. Far too cautious in his role as a professional. It was a informal style interview. I'd say greater fragmentation of a sense of community and alienation. Poor parenting from a very addicted society. Many parents are themselves unwell with little focus on mental well being and health. High alcoholism rates. We're living in a false materialistic society and have the wrong what values of what constitutes success. Its all about job, career, housing, looks. To much expectation to match up to something that is not of any inherent value of achievable for many. Young people feel inadequate that they just don't measure. It is a multitude of forces at work in society but the most fundamental reason is that Irish society for me is one which is essentially unwell, very repressed addicted to everything from shopping, alcohol, social media, shopping etc. We are an unwell society and none more so than the parents who are passing on their dysfunction and unhappiness to their kids. All part of the post colonial syndrome !
