I am reading the novel 'Sisters Under the Rising Sun' in which Margaret Dryburgh is mentioned. It is amazing how the 'Captives Hymn' was composed and sang: a beautiful piece under the most horrendous conditions. Peace and salvation to Margaret and the other captives who did not survive the liberation and the end of the war.

Every September 8 in Galveston, Texas. This hymn is played by a brass band at the sea wall. This day is the anniversary of the Great Storm of 1900 which killed 13000 people living in Galveston

Thanks so much for your kind reply! It’s lovely to hear from a descendant of the writer of one of the finest hymn tunes the 20th century produced. It’s right up there with Abbot’s Leigh, Michael, Love Unknown, Thornbury, etc. Did your grandfather read music at Oxford, or theology? I was organ scholar of Trinity 1975-8, doing music under the wonderful Dr. Bernard Rose, among others. Do keep in touch!!

I, the Lord of sea and sky I have heard my people cry All who dwell in dark and sin My hand will save I have made the stars of night I will make their darkness bright Who will bear my light to them? Whom shall I send? Here I am, Lord Is it I, Lord? I have heard You calling in the night I will go, Lord If You lead me I will hold Your people in my heart I, the Lord of wind and flame I will tend the poor and lame I will set a feast for them My hand will save Finest bread I will provide 'Til their hearts be satisfied I will give my life to them Whom shall I send? Here I am, Lord Is it I, Lord? I have heard You calling in the night I will go, Lord If You lead me I will hold Your people in my heart I will hold Your people in my heart

Dear Mr. Baldwin, In mind, the words are wedded to this tune - the sign of a miracle hymn. I hope that you will enjoy the rest of your life. I too am an organist, leaving church playing after approx. 65 years. My one joy is that I purchased a brand new home organ, 3 manual Johannes. Even though I do not have a pipe organ in my village, I feel my playing has expanded because of Johannes, and my husband loves to hear it played as well. Right now I am analyzing the Vierne Symphony # 1. All my troubles go away when I am with my organ music. My degrees in organ have provided me with a joyful life.

The tune is called 'Ernstein'. It was the tune attached to this hymn in the Revised Church Hymnary, used throughout Scotland for much of the 20th. century, and consequently the gentleman in Dollar would have been quite familiar with it.

As I walked down the road at set of sun, The lambs were coming homeward one by one. I heard a sheepbell softly calling them, Along the little road to Bethlehem Beside an open door as I drew nigh, I heard sweet Mary sing a lullaby. She sang about the lambs at close of day, And rocked her tiny King among the hay. Across the air the silver sheepbells rang. "The lambs are coming home, " sweet Mary sang. "Your star of gold, your star of gold is shining in the sky. So sleep, my little King, go lullaby." As I walked down the road at set of sun, The lambs were coming homeward one by one. I heard a sheepbell softly calling them, Along the little road to Bethlehem
