Interesting idea . Unfortunately the writer obviously found the theme beyond the scope of her imagination. .The result is a complete absence of any credible recognisable emotions. Doesn't help that the two male characters are complete jerks ..!

Ha... you mean Annika Stranded. I liked that, cos it was fifteen minutes with Nicola Walker. I don't know that the TV adaptation was very successful though. I saw her in a London bookshop once, you know. Didn't say anything, best to leave famous people alone I think...

The script for this is different somewhat from both the original and revised versions (I'm playing Teddy at the moment, it's quite a scary prospect) particularly the unlikely hero at the end. Cast: Richard Winthrop: Christopher Wright Elsie Winthrop: Tracy Ann Oberman Teddie Deakin: Adam Godley Charles Murdock: David Brooks Peggy Murdock: Alison Pettitt Julia Price: Emily Joyce Miss Bourne: Ann Beach Saul Hodgkin: John Turner Price: Hugh Dickson Sterling: Gerard McDermott Jackson: Brian Parr

Interesting - do you think the changes in this case are practical concessions to the audio medium, or something more in the area of artistic judgement?
@JavertRAКүн бұрын
@mysteriousmagpie A combination of both I think; some of it is all the freedom that audio gives (for example in the play Teddy goes to switch the train onto the siding, here he and Richard both run out and you get to see what happens.) If you have a chance to compare the two scripts, theyre also a lot different, Sterling and Mr Price are combined and the whole terrorist element of the arms smuggling plot are excised.

Wait, why is there so many adds ?? I love this channel because it’s add free 😭😭
@mysteriousmagpieКүн бұрын
That's KZbin I'm afraid - the channel isn't monetised so as a general rule there aren't ads, but YT will stick them in if a video contains licenced music, to compensate the licence holder. And, the more popular a video gets, the more ads they put in. This particular video is in the channel's top 20 most watched, so I would think that's why the ads are noticeable here. I can only say that if its a problem you could always try an ad-blocker or something.

Dear Majestical Magpie, I just wanted to put in a request for any Raymond Chandler stories if possible at sometime in the future. I have to apologize if you’ve already posted any, if you have I’m sure I’ll find them. Thank you for everything you do, you’re the best. My lonely life is much less lonely because of your library.

So, I've no Chandler on the channel yet - BUT. BBC radio adapted all of the Marlowe novels twice and somewhere I do have both sequences. There's also a really great radio adaptation of The Maltese Falcon, too. It'll be a while before I can get to these though, so in the meantime : 1) I do have adaptations of several noir-style stories on the channel (The Postman Always Rings Twice, Strangers on a Train, and a really great Double Indemnity) and 2) this channel has a nice playlist of Chandler/Marlowe radio plays. It does mix the two cycles, so the first three are the 1970s versions with Ed Bishop whose voice I prefer, and the remainder are from the 2010s - both are good though. Until I can get anything like this on my channel, you might enjoy hearing them here: kzbin.info/aero/PLPhVD5ny8GMIBpdGzhNtS6gs70rh9l_yC

(It seems I do have The Maltese Falcon to hand though so I'll try and put that on my channel in the very near future - not quite Chandler, I know, but near as Hammett (sorry))

I almost prefer the ambiguity of this to the same author's 'Rebecca'; there is a very good and quite recent film adaptation of My Cousin Rachel which starred Rachel Weisz and was perhaps a little bit more sympathetic to the titular character. Certainly, I myself got to the end thinking that I knew the truth, which I definitely hadn't with this radio version - but the film does add some new ambiguity in respect of another character which winds things a little tighter.

Brilliant. I've never read the novel but this makes for a fascinating exploration of alienation and identity confusion. It's about the human condition in all its absurd poignancy.

While I accept that you need to have advertising. But every TEN MINUTES....
@mysteriousmagpie2 күн бұрын
Absolutely NOTHING to do with me. This channel isn't monetized, and I don't get a penny. On the other hand, YT do stick adverts in, especially where a video contains licenced music as this does. The owner of the music gets revenue and the video doesn't get taken down - however, I get the impression that the more popular a video is (and Jaws is one of the most popular on the channel) the more adverts they put in. Unfortunately, as I say, I have ZERO control over it even though people have suggested that it shows how greedy I am.

So sorry about that - I'll see if I can find the original sound file and hopefully the problem will have been in the conversion. Unfortunately I recently lost my main archive drive, so my sound files are scattered in several places now so I probably won't be able to sort the problem out immediately. I'll also have to take the video down shortly - thanks for bringing the problem to my attention.

Loved this. Rickman was great! My one minor criticism is that I believe it should have ended with the sound of Cadell blowing on the whistle. Similar to the movie after Jimmy Stewart fires the gun to alert and bring the authorities to the apartment. I really enjoyed this though. Gonna go dig out my Hitchcock DVD collection...

You might be interested by a couple of other Hitchcock-related plays I have on the channel. 'The Living and the Dead' is based on the French novel that was adapted as 'Vertigo', for example. There's also 'The Blind Man', a radio adaptation of a script written for Hitchcock, but never filmed...

Hi Mysterious Magpie - I wonder if you could help me? I’m trying to find a radio play (full cast) set in a country house at the time of Sherlock Holmes in which a young man knows SH but solves the crime instead. I can’t remember the name of it but it may be on your playlist. Thank you.
@mysteriousmagpie3 күн бұрын
My first guess is that you may be thinking of The Adventure of The Reigate Squire, a later Holmes story in which Holmes is called in to a case where the police inspector, Forrester, is very competent. From memory he was played as an older man in the Jeremy Brett series, but definitely a younger man in the Clive Merrison radio series - played by Peter Davison, in fact. Let me know if this *isn''t* the one and I'll have a bit more of a think. I don't have that on my channel, but needless to say there are many other radio play channels, and this one here has it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/f6jWmXdol9WMmLM

I do somewhat agree with you as it happens. The play is considered a classic and is well-loved (and one of the most-listened-to on the channel), but personally I feel that it does take a misstep in its later stages. Still very well executed in the main though.

I've read lots of Aickman stuff and to be honest don't " get " the BBC infatuation with presenting him as a " cult " writer who is undervalued.. His prose is plodding and unimaginative and his characters are pure cardboard. Yeah...I get that he doesn't employ the " standard tropes " of horror fiction . Maybe he should have ?? Forget the post Freudian / Existential approach..?
@2msvalkyrie5294 күн бұрын
Tim McInnerny is usually worth watching in his ( normally ) typecast TV roles . Unfortunately , despite being an experienced actor he cannot do anything resembling a " character " voice.?? This was cringeworthy..! I assume the Director here was so in awe of Tim that he / she just allowed him to do as he liked...??
