I enjoyed attending and a question raised itself on the way home. How do you know that you have the correct distribution for your random variable? Consider slide 8 of this lecture from Edinburgh University, jvanderw.une.edu.au/L7_ModellingEpidemics3.pdf. The lecturer must know that at least 3 of the 4 models are wrong. All are normally distributed with the correct expected value for logistic growth as per the deterministic ODEs of Kermack-McKendrick (1927). Any implementation must clamp the value of the reproduction number to the range [0, R0] to avoid infinities, etc. As it happens the random variable is logit-normally distributed which can be easily derived from a discrete stochastic process, a card game.
