This is my favorite hand-plane restoration video of all time.

Great job on the handles man, and I love the "British Racing Green" with the semi-hammerite finish.

I had the same problem with my drill press turned out that a set screw came loose on the pulley causing it to slip

I'm definitely stealing your idea to use your drill press as a lathe! brilliant.

I admit to being a massive fan of the Record blue colour. But I love your choice of colour for this plane. I expect the fine folk who originally built it would be delighted and proud to see their work presented so well and back in the game. Huge thanks for this film

Congratulations on completely destroying a beautiful classic tool. Why in the world would you sandblast off the original japanning finish that was still largely intact, and replace it with spray paint? You could have reapplied the japanning if you wanted to show your skills. This video is a great example of how not to “restore” a tool.

Very sweet vise! And thanks for not getting weird with the process.

I have found it easiest to stick all the bits in a pot of Caustic Soda solution and simmer for 1/2 to 1 hour followed by hitting it with a pressure washer, then into the electrolysis tank. The caustic gets rid of all the crud and paint, and the electrolysis shifts all the rust. This leaves bare metal without grinding or sanding off original metal. It is up to you then whether to leave it 'au naturel', smooth and paint it, or to polish the hell out of it. Sounds like a bit of a faff, but not difficult to do and imho gives the best result for least effort. To really make the lettering pop, take a smooth file to the tops of the letters and file down to give them a smallish flat top .... it really makes a difference in the finished appearance

Amazing restoration. These videos often leave out that you need to lap the chip breaker and the back of the blade or else the plane can clog.

I am in the process of restoring a Record No 4, however your result goes far beyond my expectation.I commend your skill and diligence, I also think the paint job looks great. Thank you for showing what can be achieved with the application of effort when married to skill.

He did forget to restore a chisel before making the handle.

If you put the grain on the perpendicular direction the handle won't break anymore.

Just found and watched your video: well done. I like green. Ok, some thoughts for new restorers: The original tote/handle could of ben saved - by carful flatting of each half and a good wood glue. The slight angle change would not of effected the use, (probably less change then new handle in video). At 8:40 the tote block is drilled, if it had ben drilled half way from top, then turned and drilled from other side/end - the angle would of stayed true. (All miss alignment would hidden with in the center of the tote).😊

Purists can worry about maintaining the fidelity of rare planes, what you've got is a solid workhorse that you've restored to put back into use. It's a really nice looking restoration so you'll probably feel pride every time you use it, and that pride will make you take that little bit of extra care in your work. If it's the right colour for you, then it's right👍

Why didnt you show the sole of the plane, I think you did a fine job tho! I’ll give you a 9.65 on scale of 1 to 10!

Yeah thats great but I have too many planes to be that fussy.I liked the dedication to your plane rehabilitation but I only get my planes to user grade.Well done but a bit over the top for my liking. Cheers Old school Richie

Hi, it has been about 3 years and I'm just wondering if you've been using that plane, if yes then I wonder how the paint is currently fairing. For context I plan to do a similar "restoration" and want to paint my old 4 1/2 as I was in a way inspired by your colour choice. Cheers.

Using your drill press as a lathe! Now THAT's a great idea for those of us "non-lathe-having" people. And what the heck was that cool little wooden clamping tool you used to hold the screws that you were polishing? I WANT one of those for when I do my own polishing of small, round objects. Thank you. Beautiful restoration.

Can't argue with the results, looks great. My opinion of the color change, it's not what I would have done. That said, it's your plane, so do what you want with it.

Nice job, pity you did'nt use the blue colour as there are millions of black Stanleys and OEMs out there but very few blue ones!

Instead of blowing the dust with an air gun, I’d be wearing a decent mask, and vacuuming with a hepa filtered Henry. Not having a dig though. One of your other videos that led me to subscribing was absolutely amazing! Looking forward to watching more. But airborne dust should be a consideration👍

Changing paint color is about what you want but the purists also bicker about using japanning over painting as well.

Landrover Green? Absolutely! The colour, they should have been. Bravo! Cleaning out a deceased estate and have picked up a number of old tools, including planes. I have enough projects, but this has inspired me to have a go. Thanks
