Changing paint color is about what you want but the purists also bicker about using japanning over painting as well.

Landrover Green? Absolutely! The colour, they should have been. Bravo! Cleaning out a deceased estate and have picked up a number of old tools, including planes. I have enough projects, but this has inspired me to have a go. Thanks

That was a very good work, I'm not familiar with Record tools color but I think this was a pretty good selection. May be your next project must be your own press drill... I'm just saying

I just noticed that you didn't do japanning on the plane, so my earlier question about the brush is not needed
@davidekaterinahofstetter91442 ай бұрын
I have a few questions, after you did the sandblasting, did you clean up the plane with anything like acetone before japanning them, also what type of brush did you use to apply the paint with?

Removing original paint and patina from monuments, antique furniture and works of art is considered a crime in many states. It should also be in the case of vintage tools. That planer was in excellent condition. It only required to be cleaned of rust, ground and sharpened. Now it has lost all historical value

Please don't take offense, but I simply wanted to share a video with a different approach. The flattening of the sole was achieved by a very old machine engineering technique. The gentleman took the necessary precaution of NOT removing the frog, because of the tension created by doing so. I think that by sharing knowledge we enrich ourselves- as long as it's done with respect. Greetings from France. (I was a cabinet maker and antique furniture restorer fro some forty years. I restored ALL of my old tools, and even made a few. I just wish I knew how to make videos, but sadly I'm hopeless at that. Computer ignorant, but not a bad worker all round 😆) I hope you will enjoy this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/sGGkdICDopKNfcU

This is resurrection, not restoration! You have made this poor little piece of trapped rust become a work of art. You deserve praise, encouragement, and respect. You have brought this old marvel to another "plain". Hats off to you Sir. My deepest respects. (I just love that beautiful English Racing Green- so much warmer than the original cold Record blue- which I don't like either)

Too much video super close ups -- I gave up watching half way through because I couldn't stand the hands and workpiece jerking about all over the place. I therefore have no comment on what the finished article looks like, but I suspect that it was well over-restored.

Cold bluing is for hacks. Thera are about a billion YT videos on rust bluing, so there’s no excuse for taking a lazy way out like cold bluing. Cold bluing is a cosmetic that will need endless touching-up.
