How can you have a non Bergenser narrate a documentary on BERGEN????
@jonasdanielseneskeland3001

Made by National Broadcasting (NRK) at the time, everybody had to talk in bokmål. So the narrator might actually be a Bergenser, but changing to his NRK narrating voice on the job.

Funfact, at 26:23 they put a fake gauge because the fact that U-Boote of the type where the movie was filmed could reach 250 m and not just about 80 meters was still top secret by 1941, so they put this fake gauge on purpose.

The REAL Das Boot, haha. Or well, real-er. Das Boot I feel now while a frickin amazing movie of course, IS a bit of a dramatization. This is sort of closer I guess to how things actually were since it was actually filmed in the exact period WHEN WWII was quite a reality, in fact practically when it started.

Cr4z3d This is pretty cool though, I had always heard about U-Boote Westwarts but hadn't realized it was an actual full-length movie like this, thought it was more similar to the other short U-Boat propaganda films of that time.

Cr4z3d Definitely not Das Boot. This movie has Nazi propaganda and show German submariners as heroes. On the other hand, the movie Das Boot conveyed the message of how unnecessary war was.

Here's a piece of ironical history for you relating to this video. My grandpa on my mother's side was a German sub commander in WW2 hunting British convoys in the Atlantic. My grandpa on my dad's side was an engineer on an American sub in WW2 hunting Germans. After the war ended and my grandpa came back from spending a year as a German POW in England, he grabbed his wife and daughter (my grandma and my mother) and emigrated to the US in 1946 and shortly after meeting my other grandpa, becoming friends not long after, being fellow submariners in WW2 and may years later their kids married with me and two more brothers and a sister as a result, how's that for historical irony for you? So if it wasn't for WW2, my brothers and sister would never have been born. And I can tell you, both of my grandpas told me some very interesting stories about the war at sea and having had relatives that served on both sides, I was given a unique insight in what really happened on either side during that period for which I'm truly grateful

Just out of curiosity what u-boot did your grandpa serve on
@davidanderson1889
@davidanderson1889 9 жыл бұрын
as I recall, he served on 3 different subs. He was as I remember him saying, on U-95 that was sunk (he survived that one). After that he served on U-143 and then on U-107, or was it the other way around, I'm not sure now. He spent some time driving a desk after that at naval headquarters and in the last few days was ordered to take command of another sub but he never went and that sub ended up being sunk during an air raid at Wilhelmshafen while docked the day he was supposed to take it out to sea. Fortunately he told his crew not to show up for duty that morning as it was pretty pointless at that stage to still go out only to be sunk and he himself was hiding for a few days until it was over. He spent some time as a British POW after that

@YBM2007

@generalstabssjef
@generalstabssjef 7 жыл бұрын
@YBM2007
@YBM2007 6 жыл бұрын
@generalstabssjef
@generalstabssjef 5 жыл бұрын
NS var altså her.

I'm happy to say that some of the actors did survive the war. I know this because my dad was one of them. He was a sailor on a German u-boot. He and his crew were on shore leave when they heard about a movie being made that was looking to hire extras.Of course they jumped at the opportunity right away. My dad played the part of one of the british sailors jumping overboard when their ship was sunk! It's only about a 3 second clip but hey, they were in a movie! In the 48 minute version its about 43 minutes 9 seconds in. My dad is still alive. He is 94 years old and this is one of many many war stories he has told me over the years.

A drastically truncated version of the original which runs at double the length of this one. Wikipedia also makes the mistake of stating that the film is only forty eight minutes long when the original, just recently released in all it's digitally restored glory, runs to ninety eight minutes. Quite an amazing film and, for a change, obviously not full of anti-Nazi sermonising as are many contemporary films dealing with the German side of WW2. The film was amazingly fair in it's representation of the British and, rather than denigrating the enemy, sought to emphasise the bravery and altruistic self sacrifice of the men of the Kriegsmarine. I've just purchased this on DVD and have already watched it several times. a refreshing and revealing insight into WW2, propaganda aspect aside.

I can't see myself moving elsewhere for it seems a natural ending. :)
