Thnx for uploading this! Though you can activate autotranslate in the youtube settings (which will turn Frank Zappa into Frank Sauer) i tried to do a better translation (still full of flaws due to my poor english and Kent's unconvential use of the german language) using deepl translator: PA: If I may, on the occasion of FZ's 80th birthday on 21 dec this year, I would like to ask you a few questions about your collaboration in 1983. What are your memories of the 1983 recordings in London? KN: It was a big surprise from all sides (laughs) that it took place. It started when I had an interview with Pierre Boulez, when i was striving for a scholarship at IRCAM - which then turned out in my connection with the Ensemble Intercontemporain and IRCAM. During this first contact I saw in his office a note on his schedule that he will conduct Frank Zappa. I was surprised, of course, and asked him and he said, yes, that would be an interesting project and they will record together with Zappa - i mean the Ensemble Intercontemporain and Piere Boulez - a few pieces of Herr Zappa. So, when I went back to San Francisco I got in contact with the office of Herr Frank Zappa and asked if I could take a look on some of the scores, just out of interest. The next big surprise was - I didn't hear anything for a while - and at some point the phone rang and Herr Zappa was on the line asking me where my interest in his music came from. I told him the story and he said, ok, we could meet in San Francisco in a month and I will personally give you my scores. That's how the beginning was when we met, quite surprising and unplanned, as it always happens through music in our little world - we musicians are talking directly (naturally? freely?) to each other, it's much more efficient than email for example, email didn't exist yet, word of mouth was a very efficient way to share information. That's what happened when we met first. Of course the rest of the story is well known, he gave me my first chance with the London symphony orchestra, an orchestra I am still in contact with today. We recorded three CDs, one at Christmas, which was a surprise Christmas present (laughs). And the relationship was very intense and was - strangely enough - on a purely artistic basis. It had nothing to do with his life as a glamorous rock star, we just talked about serious music. And you can hear from his compositions that it was really vital for him. In my opinion, all the pieces are not very successful but he anyway wrote a few very very important pieces - a few - and that's already much more than what most people can achieve. So - for me this friendship was something real and profound - on a solid base. PA: Were you still in contact with him after the recordings (in the year 1983)? KN: We kept in touch until his death - interestingly, when I was with the LA philharmonic, I was able to stay with the Zappa house (??). And I had the privilege of meeting the family - the whole family - and I was in contact with his wife - Gail Zappa - until she died and I'm still in contact with his son, his elder son Dweezil Zappa. But you get the impression - he has been dead for a long time now - and it is always interesting when a person has gone and one sees what remains. For example, for my daughter, Herr. Zappa has no meaning, she has never met him, she has only seen a few video clips on TV, but as a person he plays no role for her, but she has seen a few scores in my library and played a few pieces on the piano. Interestingly enough: for my daughter and this generation - the so called generation z, millenials - Frank Zappa is a composer, not a rock personality anymore. They are too young, they have no memories. And that's interesting to see, now Herr Zappa is considered a composer. PA: In Salzburg there is a group called Zappa's friends and they would like to erect a memorial to him (Kent giggles) - what do you think of this idea? KN: Yes well (grins), why not - did mr. zappa give concerts here? Does he have a special relationship with the city? PA: It's more about the connection to Mozart. KN: Aaah well (another enigmatic grin all over his face) it is - there will be just another surprise (laughs). the whole history of Frank Zappa is simply full of surprises.

If you use the settings to enable auto-translation to English, KZbin translates "Herr Zappa" to "Mr. Clean". I'm impressed by Kent Nagano's language skills. When he was working in Montreal he became reasonably fluent in French as well.
