@13:44 What’s it like living Nextdoor to Bez? Haaaa haa haaa… Growing up in Chicago late 80s Shaun was a huge influence on me and our party enterprise. The news that we were getting about the latest of Shaun was either false or so old we felt powerless. Now so many people in America who love him and the Mondays really wish we had a direct line to him. Wish he wouldn’t hide from us still. He’s paid for his mistakes ten fold the man deserves a huge break and a return of all the love he gave us all. Super nice guy

I dont know a lot about homo history, but surely Williams was a pathfinder for so many gays. He must have made them appear less threatening in far more dangerous times. Such a pity he couldnt enjoy his success more.

“Where there is shit and riots on the streets may we bring the Not the Nine O’Clock News.” The last ditch stand of British humour against Thatcher’s Britain before it disappeared in the Poll Tax and up the arse of political correctness.

I never cared for Kenneth Williams (he was before my time, and as a queer man I hate the caricature he represented), but this is a tender, honest portrayal of what queer loneliness can be like. Williams was a man who lived through many of the important milestones of modern LGBTIQ+ identity, and managed to let it all pass him by through a self-hating shame he didn't deserve. Thanks for posting.

Also, Michael Sheen is a gem. Understated, precise, soulful. He's never given a bad performance, and always rises above his material.

Tho I've stopped being astonished at the brilliance of Sheen's talent, I've rarely been grabbed from the first instant like this before. This film caught KW's extraordinary range - perhaps bipolarity - and the utter heartache of his unexplored selves. The spectacle of comedy feels wholesome when we're laughing - even when it abuts cruelty. It's been my career for decades, so I'm hardly objective here, but the quality of mercy - one I've not regarded highly enough before - is pouring from this play. But I guess we've all had the hunch that mean streaks run inward. For example, in Tony Hancock, it was hard to feel empathy, but it's the takeaway here. Bravo to Marty Hesford, the author, as well. I believe that Kenneth Williams himself would be applauding the loudest of all.

It was a missed opportunity for him that he didn't take up boxing the way his father suggested. If he'd learnt to stick up for himself a little better his subsequent life might have been happier.

Thanks very much for posting, I hadn't seen this. Oh my goodness, where to start; heaven help any British comedian, let alone a gay British comedian, who inevitably gets a biopic indicating their lives as nothing more than a sad tragedy, see also Frankie Howerd's awful biopic. Based on comments here, I must be the only person who sees Sheen's performance as a rank caricature of the true Kenneth Williams. Williams was a British gem, he deserves better than this. One positive I can say is that David Charles as Charles Hawtrey was uncannily realistic.
@mortalclown3812
@mortalclown3812 4 ай бұрын
I agree with your words about Charles - and the script, imo - giving Hawtrey the depth and dignity most deserved. As for Sheen's portrayal, I'm taken as much by the script by Hesford: it rings with appreciation for KW's genius and mercy for what I describe elsewhere as his unexplored selves. I'm only sorry that anyone feels this film does injustice to Williams. Then again, I've read his diaries and see this as both homage to him and a true cautionary tale against - a lot. The irony is that those to whom it would be directed - and the play isn't so heavy-handed - are unlikely to see it. Paz y luz ✨️

Add the Jam to the list of good bands sacrificed to one ego. They treat their band mates with contempt - thinking of Foxton, Ronson, Karn and others. Paul Weller was an arch dick - he did F all of note after. A$$hole
