These tips actually illustrate my gripe with the Move being marketed as a sketchpad that you use before taking tracks into Ableton - you have to do unnatural workarounds to the limitations which are *not* what you want in your track in Ableton. I'm hanging on to mine for now but I'm definitely not sold on the device as it is.

Thanks for the walk-through, subscribed! Can you please describe the exact way to add an external synth, pls? I have a cable on my “midi out” and want to plug that into the XY. Is it the “in”, “midi” or “midi sync” cable option on the OP XY? Which one does the cable go into? Then, what do I need to set up on the XY? On “3”, the midi section, I have channel one enabled. What else do I have to do there? On “5”, I have the “input” set to the cable plug option. Do I even need this area? This seems so simple, and yet I can’t patch in an external synth to the XY, no sounds is coming out of it. Can you please walk me through what I’m doing wrong? 🙏🏽 Thanks in advance !!
@expander37109 күн бұрын
So your midi out from your synth goes into “midi” on the xy. Then you need your audio out of your synth into “in”. You’ll need to enable this on the audio track, as shown in the video. It’s the 5th auxiliary track. You need to rotate the first knob to the picture of the jack cable, then click that knob to enable the audio. Also set your level here. Finally your midi channel; this will depend what your synth is sending out on. On the third auxiliary track to can change the midi channel, try them all until you get a sound from your synth. Hope it works!

Thank you so much for your feedback, I’m almost there!! I’m getting sounds now from my Roland J6, and it’s cool. It’s that sound AND the sound of a track on the XY, so having those two layered sounds is SUPER cool! But, I have to play the J6 to get both sounds. Still trying to figure out how to get both sounds when I play the XY. Right now, when I play the XY, only stock sounds are coming out, not the combined sounds with the J6. But, I didn’t know I had to tap down on that first knob to enable it, that got me one step closer, thank you for all your help! Still tweaking things to see if I can get the sounds from my J6 to play, but when I play them from the XY. Thanks again!

You’re doing it in the first 6 second part of your video! Haha, THAT’S what I’m trying to do. At the 6 second mark, your getting sounds from your synth, but through the XY! How, Mr. Wizard??! ✨✨

Figured it out! Just had my midi cable in the wrong place. Once I switch it to midi OUT on my J6, everything worked. Thanks for all you do!

Nice one. I also think the limitations of Move make it easier to learn than daw which is less overwhelming. But, at the same time it has similar functionality to the big brother, and you can seamlessly move the project and continue there. I think it is perfect for Ableton users who want a dawless mobile setup but being able to add finishing touches in the daw later

can you send your ableton projects to playaround with them and move them back as projects to ableton?
@expander371020 күн бұрын
Kind of, but only if your original project in ableton conforms to the track count and devices the move can run. It’s not ideal, really.

I did automation with the filter and it has a smoothing effect you can do which makes it jump parameters slowly. I am shocked that it has no sidechain though or DJ filter that is always available to do a build up or breakdown. These two features would be first on my list when making this device.
@expander3710Ай бұрын
@@antikytheramechanism7909 I’m not certain but I believe you can use the master EQ to fade between two settings of your choice, one could be set to a high pass kinda setting, for example - but don’t quote me on that! I haven’t tested it yet.

So does this mean the Ableton Move is no longer your favorite new groovebox? 🙂
@expander3710Ай бұрын
Ha! I think this an excellent unit, but the Move probably beats it for immediacy and sound, I’d say. I think the TE digital sound isn’t for everybody, but some like it a lot. It’s also hard to recommend this to many people simply because of the price, but I’m glad to have it - the battery life really is best in class. I’ve got one more video to make with the XY then I’ve got a couple of Move videos planned, one detailing the process of initial idea, then taken into Ableton to finish the track completely. Thanks for your comment.
