I found this in my local library in 1990 or 91 on VHS. It instantly became a movie my brother and friends would watch many times since then. 1997 felt like the distant future back then as we were only 12 years old back then.

It's crazy that it took Carpenter a while to get this movie made, if I were a movie exec and someone came in and pitched the movie with the line "New York is a prison" I would've gone "Sold! How much do you need?"

Who's still loving this in 2024? I saw Escape when it came out at a drive-in in Memphis. It was playing with The Fog in a double feature. #Gen-XGreatTimes

I still remember watching this movie for the first time back in 1981.. It was at a drive in movie theater in Hometown, PA, outside of Tamaqua.. I can’t remember the name of the drive in, but it was a foggy summer night after a lot of thunderstorms earlier in the evening.. The first movie was The Howling, I think.. My dad took the family to the movies that night, and me, my brother and sister and mom were excited to have a night out! Me? I was just really stoked to see Escape From New York, because the newspaper ads looked so cool… So, the first movie ran.. Scary! And then there was intermission so folks could go to the shack in the center of the drive in lot to get some more French fries or whatever… And then… Escape From New York started.. And from the first moments - the opening credits and theme music - I was completely sucked in.. I knew this was going to be a movie that I would be thinking about long after it ended! And I will say this - over 40 years later, this movie and the music in the opening credits still haunts me.. I have watched this movie many times over the years and still enjoy it every time! It has aged well (it is not the movie’s fault that the World Trade Center was destroyed).. I have also watched the sequel Escape From LA.. Enjoyable, though a little campy at times!! I have also read many stories about the movie studios wanting to ‘re-boot’ the original Escape From New York.. And I say NO.. DON’T DO IT.. I believe that some things in this world should be left alone.. Escape From New York is one of them. It was PERFECT - AS IS.. The atmosphere, the music, the feeling one gets as they watch, the thinking one does after the movie ends.. Just sayin’…

Those graphics were cutting edge stuff at the time, probably done on an Apple II computer with 16 colors! Which when you were used to black and white text was pretty impressive.
