Thank you for this video!! I'm literally sitting here trying to figure out how to customize my undergrad degree in BioSci as a new transfer to uni. I've spent actual YEARS trying to figure out which of the 4 (marine science, marine bio, biological oceanography, marine chemistry) would be right for my interests. You're the very first person to give answers that didn't just leave me more confused! 😂

I noticed you ladies didn't have any hydration vests. How'd you gals stay hydrated during the run? And how long did you train with your run day shoes before marathon day?
@alexusandmichi
@alexusandmichi 11 күн бұрын
We didn’t practice with hydration vests so we didn’t want to change it up for the marathon. There’s sooo many hydration stations along the way, though, so we just had water at every station! We also had some electrolyte tablets that are supposed to help stay hydrated longer when you take them with water. And we used our run day shoes for two of the long runs we did before marathon day!

Thanks for the info! I’m looking to transfer from community college to Uni for a bachelors in linguistics. They have a minor in Tesol or computational Linguistics paired with this degree. What are your thoughts on the Tesol certificate ?
@alexusandmichi
@alexusandmichi 24 күн бұрын
A TESOL certificate is great if you want to teach English to non English speakers! Many places abroad accept it, too! That‘ll be what most employers look for if you want to teach English! You could still do TESOL research with the certificate, too. But it’ll all be teaching-focused. Computational linguists are what all the big companies want to hire! It’ll be a lot of data analysis with large datasets of spoken and/or written texts. You could stay in academia or go into industry! So it all depends on what you prefer doing once you’re done with the degree!

Hi Alexus I am from Iran, and I want to know if I can get a funded PhD program and I particularly like conducting high-quality research, can the UHM satisfy me? Considering laboratory facilities, general situation, etc. I am really confused. Please let me know your opinion.

Thanks for watching the video! I think it really depends on on what subject/research you’re interested in doing in graduate school. Also, depending on the research you want to do, which schools have the best advisors that align with your interests AND are looking to take on grad students. The grad application process can be confusing, but we’ve made a bunch of videos guiding you through the process so you should go check those out!! Hope they can help you!

Is the East west centre graduate degree fellowship a fully funded scholarship ?Can i apply for it after submitting my application to UH Manoa?Are there any chances of getting it?
@alexusandmichi
@alexusandmichi 29 күн бұрын
The student affiliate program is a scholarship for reduced housing costs! It doesn’t cover all of the costs but it’s affordable ☺️ you’ll need to study something pacific/Asia-related to get it but I think the chances of getting it are high! They have a few other scholarship options but we‘re not as familiar with them. Most (if not all) of their housing is for grad students only, though! I don’t see why you shouldn’t apply as soon as possible even if you don’t have your admission letter yet, it’s probably good to get the application out anyway! Good luck!! 🤞🍀

This video/thoughts dont seem to be very well executed. A criticism of the idea that PhDs can be more stressful than a “8 to 5” job could be that stress is highly subjective and depends on individual circumstances, rather than the type of work itself. Many jobs, particularly those in high-stakes industries like finance, healthcare, or law, can be just as demanding, if not more so, than a PhD program. These jobs often involve long hours, high levels of responsibility, and significant pressure to perform. Also, in a typical job, especially in competitive fields, individuals might face constant deadlines, performance reviews, job insecurity, and the need to balance multiple roles or projects simultaneously. Unlike PhD students, who usually have more control over their schedules and research topics, people in certain jobs may have less autonomy and face more immediate pressures from clients, bosses, or market conditions.
@alexusandmichi
@alexusandmichi Ай бұрын
Thank you for these insights! Other jobs also being demanding or subjectively more demanding to you does not invalidate our points.

Yeah... al good and nice until you have to deal with tenure-track ass-kissing imbeciles that don't give a 5hit about research or students. And the beaureaucratic administrators. If you find an academic job that is not f_cked up you are either lucky or you are f_cked up as well.
