Well, appears I will be the first posting to your video. I have a Ranger Pontoon 223FC with a Mercury 150HP and has all the boat accessories 1) power bimini canopy, 2) radio, 3) live well, 4) lights. However, I have two Garmin Helix graphs which is coming off the current lead acid battery. Fairly new boat, however I have had battery drain after like less than 3-4 hours fishing. My trolling motor is the 36v Minn Kota Ulterra and powered with the Dakota Lithium (1) one big 36v 63AH battery and thus far has worked well. How far do you let the trolling motor battery deplete before charging? However I am now looking at the cranking battery option with lithium, which now Mercury and Dakota lithium is supporting use for a lithium 135 Dual Purpose battery. What I would like to know is about your wiring setup; 1) did you place an inline fuse between battery and boat motor, watched where isolator’s where used but different motor ; 2) I have read on KZbin posting that the BMS and Dakota Lithium was called out, where the BMS cut off the battery to graphs etc.. This was due to the battery getting to a full state of charge from the alternator on the boat motor. Have you experienced any of this on your setup? 3) Any special parts/connectors you used for connecting boat motor starting cable and then all the accessories eyelets? If you have photo’s you could send to me if you feel it would help show your setup, I would appreciate it. Trying to protect the boat motor, accessories attached to the lithium battery should I finally go that route and working on my knowledge from those with better expertise for wiring and connectors. Thanks for your help! James

Hey James, thanks for the very detailed comment. Feel free to get a hold of me on a messaging platform like Instagram or Facebook @patrickzajdel or @precisionmarineinstallations As far as charging lithiums, I charge my batteries after each use. I recommend that to all my customers as well. The 135ah DL+ Dakota is a great option for a starting battery especially now that it features Bluetooth. I have not had any customers have problems with the batteries as either stand alone electronics batteries or starting batteries for mercury and Evinrude outboards. As far as connecting to the battery posts there’s a few things I do to eliminate number of connection at the battery. A buss bar of your choosing will go a long ways to consolidate your connections to one positive and one negative at the battery with all accessory connections going to the buss bar. All motor related connections should go directly to the battery. The lithium starting battery will be a drop-in replacement for your lead acid starting battery

Patrick thank you for the reply. For some reason I wasn’t notified of your reply very strange. Came back to watch the video again and happen to find the posting. I don’t do facebook, so replying this way on KZbin. Anyway thanks for the input on the Dakota Lithium Dual Purpose 135AH cranking/deep cycle battery. First hand experience is always the best and that’s why I search this forum for knowledge. The dealer for the boat has the wiring for accessories sitting on top of the engine cable, turns out everything uses ‘eyelet’ style connections even for the engine. The engine cable is on the bottom to make good connection to the battery and I don’t remember if it has a buss bar or not. I believe the wires come up through the floor to make the connection, however I would have look under console to see if any such is located there. It does work this way, just that the lead acid battery has been a problem since I purchased the boat with all the electronics for fishing and dealer didn’t even suggest a second ‘house’ battery. One of the reason looking at the 135ah lithium and is just a direct replacement with lots of energy for the electrical devices when fishing. Never have had a problem with the Dakota Lithium 36v-63AH for the trolling motor work’s well! Trying to problem solve the consistent issue! My work around this past summer was to put the battery on an onboard NOCO 5A charger/maintainer every time it is on the lift and turn main power switch OFF. Still have some concern’s however the current battery is only slightly over 2 years old. However just about to make a decision to either get one ordered or try to get another year out of the lead acid. Not cheap, if it makes life on the water during summer more hassle free, it could make it much better. Again thanks for the reply!
@patrickzajdel3 күн бұрын
@ I would definitely recommend an onboard charger for the starting battery when the boat is not in use. Always plugin before your next use or after your last use! The engines alternator will never top up the battery to full if using fish finders/chartplotters. If you are in Ontario by any chance, you can always bring the boat by the shop and we can get you setup.
@Majeskty3 күн бұрын
@ Thanks Patrick! Ontario a bit out of our location area to haul a boat, however appreciate the suggestion! I live in Omaha NE, with the Ranger 223FC stored near Detroit Lakes, Minnesota and our summer lake cabin. The NOCO charger is only 5A, however can do lithium. Since the boat alternator will do some charging of the DL 135ah dual purpose battery, the battery won’t deplete as much of my dedicated trolling battery. Discussing charging amperage with DL sales/support. They thought the 5A charger may just work for topping off that battery at the lift for the 135AH since it does get some charging from engine alternator. What has been your experience and thought or should I get more of a 10A or a 20A charger/maintainer? If the battery was depleted way down the 5A would take way too long on charging, 13.5 hours on a 10A to charge the 135Ah if fully depleted and 6.5 on a 20A charger. Then it would make sense for a larger charger for saving time. Thank for the expertise, my first boat and a learning curve.😁

Great vid, thanks! Since my 2012 HDS-9 gen 2 side scan sonar transducer are cracked (but Its working) Im about to upgrade with a new 1000 usd-ish unit, mostly for better and more acccurate sidescan. (Fishing mostly 0-15 meters fresh water). Maps (not too important) and some down sonar will be mainly on the HDS... For what I hear, the Hummings are a bit better on sidescan due to the Mega and there are lots of settings to be done if you want to dig deep into It. Lowrance are maybe (?) a lot easier to dial in right out of the box and has Its advantages of course. Find my HDS a bit lag-ish and not too responsive. To come to the point, I would appreciate any/your thoughts on the reliability of the three brands. Software, support, quality of the transducers, bugs/resets, and stuf. // M

I’ve found Garmin to be most user friendly personally and least buggy. Humminbird as of late have had some struggles with updates and quality. All three brands have a great side imaging now since all are in the Megahertz range. With Garmin, you want the GT56 transducer. With Lowrance you want the HDS Pro units with the Active Imaging 3-in-1 HD transducer.
