I only wish Craft would have given us a mono reissue of Way Out West, which no label has offered so far. Ditto for many other classic jazz albums. Maybe, a mono RSD reissue could be done, which Craft have offered for one or two other titles. I just prefer my jazz in mono as I know many others do.
@bernhardh618412 күн бұрын
I own the Way Out West box but not the new stand alone release. Shouldn’t it be the identical pressing? By any chance can you compare the pressing numbers. Also both should show the BG initials from B. Grundman.

Was excited for this one and listened today, I do not like how this record sounds and the mastering choices made. Also, the tape hiss on this release is quite loud and seems to originate out of the right channel, louder than the music at times. Ultimately, I think I prefer Kevin G’s approach to mastering jazz and dislike what Bernie does. The presentation is good, great pressing from RTI but the sound is a fail for me. Beauty is we have other choices out there as this is the golden age of vinyl.

I think the best LP that the Evans/Lafaro/Motian trio made was "Portrait In Jazz", recorded 28 December 1959. Village and Debby LPs didn't do much for me. Kinda bland, uninspired. Motian left Evans because he was playing "cocktail music". In '59, they sounded inspired; later, no IMHO.
@JackgrahamphotographАй бұрын
Agree.. the Portrait album is a great one. Like I said in the video, I wish the trio was allowed to stretch out more. I guess Riverside wanted abput 20 min per side and 4 tunes...shame. Thanks for the comment and for listening. We appreciate you!--JG

Great video again Man. Attention ! About Quincy's Birth Of The Band, the 2 first tunes on Face A, "Birth Of The Band" and "Moanin'" : Ray Brown is on bass and Don Lamond on drums ! Not Milt Hinton and not Sam Woodyard ! If you listen carefully and know a little bit bass and drums, you can immediately hear that's not, far away not The Judge and not Sam ! About Bill's "For The Second Time", he always told me that he was very happy about it, which was very rare coming from him ...

I’d like to see Count Basie’s “Me and You” and “Get Together” reissued. They’re both great albums but they’re quite pricey here in the UK (if you can find one). Both fantastic audiophile quality recordings from what I’ve heard. They even sound good streaming them from Spotify so I bet they would be awesome if Acoustic Sounds gave them the full treatment.

MCPS is not a record label. It stands for Mechanical-Copyright Protection Society. MCPS collects and distributes mechanical royalties to songwriters, composers and publishers when their works have been copied or reproduced. Mechanical royalties are generated when a musical work is reproduced onto CD, vinyl, DVD and Blu-ray, downloaded and streamed or synchronised into a TV programme.

Very good video Man. Lucky used to live in Lausanne at the end of the 60's beginning of the 70's, just near by my appartment. I have a lot of stories about how he was with people, the musicians, producers etc. One of the last musicians who saw him homeless in Seattle was Hank Jones, in 1995. He told me this when he just saw him, one week after. I don't think is so underrated because a lot of people still talk about him a lot. Every time there's a new release or reissue of him, the sellings are really very excellent. I think Harold Land is really very underrated but not Lucky.

Hi Jack, Gee The UHQR Debby is spendy. Luckily I brought the Tape Project version before the pricing for these tapes and postage from the US became insane. I did watch a review (Dave Denyer?) comparing the tape to the new UHQR and not surprisingly according to the particular reviewer, the tape was still the reference. Was Looking for some more Harold land and found this "Curtis Counce, Jack Sheldon, Harold Land, Carl Perkins, Frank Butler Quintet - Complete Studio Recordings. The Master Takes" looks interesting, will let you know what the performance is like
@reisserjean-michelakabeeth85515 ай бұрын
The complete studio recordings of C.Counce : you talk about the cd box set ? Don't buy it, it's not complete. The 5tet sessions are complete but not the sessions ! You better buy all the different CD's on OJCCD. Those are complete sessions, just for your infos.

You're so, so right about Lucky Thompson, he was an underrated great, like Don Byas. But I never knew him to play alto, at least not on anything I have. On Lucky Strikes he plays tenor and soprano. Do you know of recordings I'm not aware of where he plays alto?

Great video as always 🙂 That release of Peckin' Time was released on a label called Rat Pack Records I have it in my want list, Rat Pack Records have released quite a few Blue Note records that Blue Note haven't re-issued
@reisserjean-michelakabeeth85515 ай бұрын
Peckin' Time was released a lot on LP, 95 % in Japan. Rat Pack label is from Paris, France. I still don't know if they release their reissues (they do a lot of different styles of music) from the tapes. Seeing the prices they charge, I sincerely doubt that it comes directly from the tapes but they sound very good. For my money, I still prefer the japanese pressings from the 70's, 80's and 90's if you don't have the original ones (although it's not always the originals that sound the best, far from it, it's much more complex than that). With those japaneses, they all sound and are pressed fantasticly, in every way possible.

Great video, Jack. Thx. I succumbed and and bought the Debby UHQR (CAD 300!!). I’ll do a full review. Actually, the very famous Muti /EMI is not on the Dream List. In fact, I’ve never heard it. Must remedy that. Recorded in 1979, so full analogue I would think. Hope to see you tomorrow night on the show.
