This church is once Islamic mosque in according to a local legend built on top of an existing church by the Ottomans. They built a caravanserai beside it for traveling merchants. After the independence of Bulgaria in 1878, the caravanserai along with some buildings destroyed while the mosque was spared and later neglected. Uzundzhovo had its own church until it got collapsed. Lacking sufficient funds to rebuild the collapsed church, ecclesiastical board proposed convert the neglected mosque into a church. The building was then passed to village parish as property of the church. However the villagers resisted the idea of converting the mosque into a church and instead preferred to have it demolished and reused the building materials to rebuild the collapsed church. After several years of debate, the idea for conversion prevailed as the building had to be preserved for posterity and there was already an existing building to replace the old collapsed church. It was officially got consecrated as a church in 1906 and later got reconsecrated in 2007.
