1:53 - In the event of emergency, that slip track is used for shuntback purposes. There are a few on each line and also, a sign with LM stands for 'longueur maximale' to indicate the maximum length of the tram required to reverse! Hope this is a clever fact! 7:38 - The squealing on the curves is hilarious, but there, at Pont Michel (a terminus between 2007 and 2013), speed limit is 15km/h for climbing the bridge over the railway!

Thank you for this very informative post about Berlin railway, where I have travelled in 1980s while visiting Germany (then GDR and FRG) from Moscow. I also happened to visit the main railway station Friedrichstrafe Bannhof and Zoologescher Garten. After fall of the Berlin Wall, the Berlin railway station has been developed and modified extensively. While coming from Moscow, Friedrichstrafe Bannhof was the final detraining station.

1:02 The german S-Bahn (short form for "Schnell-Bahn", what means "Fast Train") is simular to a normal railway and uses mostly normal rails which can used by other trains. The trains can speed up faster than regular trains, and there are more doors for a quick passenger change and there are no toilets. Only in Hamburg and Berlin they have a completely different electricity system (and profile), so that no other train can drive on their tracks.

Good news! The airport is now open! I flew into Berlin on September 30 2024 and most of it was fully functional! Access to the train station however leaves much to be desired. It was incredibly confusing and the RB-23 train I needed to take was mislabeled.

Hello David, Thank you so much for this history of Berlin's trains. I create scenarios for Train Simulator Classic, and have become very interested in this area, when creating on the route 'Berlin - Leipzig. You have helped me understand immensely, on how I might proceed to recreate certain time periods. Thank you. You have done a marvellous job with this. Well done.

Re: your closing comments, David - the idea of the 'joining-up' of the Cromford & High Peak 'Loop' bits sounds good in theory, but it should be remembered that the main (south-eastern) part - Dowlow/Hurdlow to Cromford - has some ferocious gradients which, though walkable, aren't suitable for regular bicycles or cyclists. Meanwhile, the very much abandoned (north-western) part is a bleak and desolate stretch, with numerous sections not possessing any infrastructure that'd be a minimum requisite for a 'normal' bicycle-ride. I believe that there's also a ⅔ or ¾km (sealed) tunnel along the trail, at the Goyt Valley.

There are SIX and not four main terminals in Paris: Nord, Est, Saint Lazare, Lyon, Montparnasse and Austerlitz. Indeed France and its SNCF focus more on the organisation, interconnections, passenger throughput etc than on Architectural prowess. There are also rules in France about protecting the "Sites Classés" (National heritage) that you cannot change without a thorough review and "National intrerest" aspects for changes. Massive walls around Eurostar installation is British Sovereignty at its best. On the continent, we have no borders but with England there were always barriers and its not going any better since Brexit. Shitty weather: you picked a very poor day for your video.
