You can add this condition while returning ans vector: if (ans.size()==nums.size()/2 && ans.back() != -1) return ans; Otherwise it will fail on some test cases, like this: nums = [3,7,7,1,5,3]

@@Chill_Magma other methods are quite easy to dry run on paper but i can't find any divide and conquer approach on this problem))
