In terms of arm strength, Tarkenton was average at best when compared to other NFL quarterbacks. But he more than made up for that in most other areas of quarterbacking. Had he played for Bill Walsh or Don Coryell, I doubt he would have had to run for his life as often as he did.

Saw Fran a lot both before and after his stint with the Giants. Fran was unbelievable. And he called his own plays ! Watch his films today vs. the kids playing today. You can almost see his mind at work, and not listening to a headset in his helmet. The maturity and craftsmanship he displayed with the Vikes from 72 thru 78 was unbelievable.

It's unfortunate Fran Tarkenton never won a Superbowl. Tarkenton along with Jim Kelly are the greatest quarterbacks that never won a Superbowl which is why I disagree with those who say Dan Marino is the greatest quarterback that never won a Superbowl.

You’re right. Always great teams and came up short. Feel bad for Coach Grant. He was also one of the very best.

Fran got his passing yards long before QBs became a protected species. WRs could be hit down field and the league played 14 games per season. That ads up to a lot of games over his career.

He was great. So great, in fact, that his records stood for decades. And he didn't get to play during the 80's, 90's, etc and those passing eras. He was still top ten in yardage and TDs until just a few years ago. And he didn't get the benefit of the "don't touch the QB" rules they get these days.

He had the most passing yards record for 15 or 16 years until Dan Marino broke it. He retired in 1978, I believe, so just think how far ahead of his time he was. Plus he played when there were only 12-14 games a season.

He was and is my favorite Quarterback of all time. I patterned my street ball play after him. However I was switched to half back because of my speed.

I have spent about two years researching and creating a formula to evaluate a quarterbacks career. Also, my formula allows you to compare quarterbacks from different eras by first finding out how far above average they were when compared to the quarterbacks who played at the same time under the same rules and conditions. I am trying to get the book that I wrote on the subject into print but have not yet. My formula has 16 different categories and is without a doubt the most comprehensive study ever done. When applying this formula which includes categories like offensive team success and includes the playoff success of teams which boosts quarterbacks like Brady, Starr, Bradshaw, Montana and Aikman beyond what their personal play would suggest. So team success is taken into consideration but not to the extent that most people want it to when naming the GOAT most people just seem to want to take the team success and not take into consideration the quality of the team. I am still looking for a permanent name for my book but am currently refering to the study as the REAL GOAT scoring system. No stone is left unturned in the study. when using this method the top 10 quarterbacks of all time from 10 to 1 are as follows; 10 - Dan Fouts, 9 - Steve Young, 8- Aaron Rodgers, (His score is after 2020 and is definitely higher now, possibly high enough to be #5), 7 - Roger Staubach, 6 - Tom Brady, 5 - Y. A. Tittle, 4 - Johnny Unitas, 3 - Drew Brees, 2 - Peyton Manning and the greatest quarterback of all time when you take into consideration how far above average they were is Fran Tarkenton, The Real GOAT.

Bud Grant will always be the definition of class. I was very disappointed when they moved into the Metrodome in 1982. To me, the team lost a lot of its character. Their playing indoors was comparable to claiming that Leif Ericson and his pals sailed the North Atlantic in a Norwegian Cruise ship. If you're going to call yourselves the Vikings, remain outdoors and brave the elements. I really believe Coach Grant felt the same way. When he saw one of the ball boys wearing gloves, Coach Grant told him to take them off because he was part of the team, too. The speech that Joe Kapp made when he refused to accept the team's most valuable player award in 1969 is the greatest I've ever heard, and I do mean EVER, when he said there are 40 most valuable players on the Vikings. Every team should hear his speech at the beginning of every season to emphasize that "We are a team." I hurt deeply when I heard that Fran Tarkenton's father had died of a heart attack after the Cowboys upset the Vikings in the "Hail Mary Game" in 1975. His father's name was Dallas. Geez Louise. God bless the Vikings of the Bud Grant Era. I wish I had known all this a long time ago. Incidently, these comments came from a guy who was an avid Cowboys fan from 1967-1993. I apologize for the lengthy post, but this has been a powerful video.
